Uruguay - Visiting the famous giant finger sculpture in Punta del Este: it’s bigger than I thought. / Visitando la famosa escultura de dedos gigantes en Punta del Este: es más grande de lo que pensaba. 😃❤️

On our third day of the trip, the itinerary we had put together said that we had to make it all the way to Punta del Este. This is one of the most famous places in Uruguay, so I was very excited to finally get to visit it. We had had an amazing stay in Piriápolis, but whenever you have the chance to explore a little more, you have to take it. That day, we got up early and, after traveling 40 km with an intermediate stop at Punta Ballena, we finally arrived in Punta del Este. Typical tourists, the first thing we did was visit the giant fingers to get that Instagram-worthy photo 😃.

En nuestro tercer día de paseo, el itinerario que habíamos armado decía que teníamos que llegar hasta Punta del Este. Este lugar es uno de los más famosos en Uruguay, así que estaba muy emocionada por poder conocerlo al fin. Habíamos tenido una estadía grandiosa en Piriápolis, pero siempre que se puede conocer un poco más, hay que aprovechar. Ese día nos levantamos temprano y después de viajar 40 km, con una parada intermedia en Punta Ballena, finalmente llegamos a la Punta del Este. Típico de turistas, lo primero que hicimos fue ir a visitar los dedos gigantes para obtener la foto instagrameable 😃.

Punta del Este is probably one of the most elegant coastal cities I have ever seen. In Argentina, when someone says “spending the summer in Punta del Este,” it is associated with vacations for people with high purchasing power, as this area of Uruguay is by no means inexpensive. However, with the necessary planning, we, ordinary working people, were able to make it there, even if it was just to enjoy the free attractions. Nature seemed to know that you don’t get to visit Punta del Este every day, so it had gifted us a beautiful, sunny day.

Punta del Este es probablemente una de las ciudades costeras más elegantes que vi en mi vida. En Argentina, cuando uno dice "veranear en Punta del Este", lo asocia a las vacaciones de personas con alto poder adquisitivo, ya que esta zona de Uruguay no es para nada costosa. Sin embargo, con la organización necesaria, nosotros, trabajadores normales, pudimos llegar hasta allí, aunque sea a disfrutar de las cosas gratis. La naturaleza sabía que no todos los días se está de paseo en Punta del Este, así que nos había regalado un día soleado y hermoso.

Without a doubt, one of the things you “have to do” in Punta del Este is visit the giant finger sculpture. The beach, with its light-colored sand stretching out in front of beautiful buildings for several kilometers, is impressive, but the photo with the finger sculpture is the one everyone wants. This is the typical landmark that says, “I’ve been there.” When we visited, the fingers were painted a dull gray, but from what I could see in other photos, they are often painted different colors depending on the season or a special celebration.

Sin dudas, lo que "hay que hacer" sin falta en Punta del Este, es ir a visitar la escultura de los dedos. La playa con arena clara frente a edificios hermosos se extiende por varios kilómetros, pero la foto con la escultura de dedos es la que todos quieren. Este es el típico ícono que te dice "yo estuve ahí". Para el momento de nuestra visita, los dedos estaban pintados de un gris opaco, pero por lo que pude ver en otras fotos, suelen pintarlos de otros colores dependiendo de la temporada o alguna celebración especial.

This sculpture represents a giant hand that appears to be emerging from the ground, with its longest finger measuring around five meters. According to information online, the artwork is called “Man Emerging into Life,” and its creator is Chilean artist Mario Irarrázabal, who installed it on this beach in 1982. Its structure is made of concrete reinforced with iron to withstand the rain and wind. Visiting this sculpture was a key moment in our trip around Uruguay, as it would be the farthest point we would reach during our long-weekend getaway.

Esta escultura representa una mano gigante que simula estar saliendo del suelo, en donde su dedo más largo medirá unos cinco metros. Según internet, esta obra se llama "Hombre emergiendo a la vida" y el autor es el chileno Mario Irarrazábal, quien la emplazó en esta playa en 1982. Su estructura es de hormigón con hierros para resistir a las lluvias y vientos. Visitar esta escultura fue un punto clave en nuestro paseo por Uruguay, ya que sería lo más lejos que llegaríamos con nuestra escapada de fin de semana largo.

We stayed at the sculpture for quite a while, taking plenty of photos to keep as memories. Whenever I visit somewhere new, I love feeling like a tourist, and we certainly were tourists here. Until this trip, I didn’t know much about Uruguay, but this getaway gave us a good overview of the coastal area. Everything went well on this trip, which was somewhat organized on the go but without losing our desire to keep exploring new places. I hope we can do it again more often in the future 😃.

Nos quedamos un buen rato en la escultura, tomando varias fotos para nuestros recuerdos. Siempre que voy de paseo a algún lugar nuevo me encanta sentirme como turista, y efectivamente acá lo éramos. Hasta antes de este viaje, no conocía mucho de Uruguay, pero esta escapada nos permitió tener un buen panorama de la zona de la costa. Todo salió bien en este paseo, algo organizado sobre la marcha pero sin perder las ganas de seguir explorando lugares. Espero que podamos repetir más en el futuro 😃.
