Korean drama I watched but honestly could not understand, even though I tried, was Doctor Shin. I started watching it with the hope that I would eventually understand the storyline and enjoy the drama. But the more I watched, the more confused I became. At some point, I stopped trying to figure everything out because I realized that I probably would not understand it even if I tried my best. Seriously, everything was confusing!
The part that confused me the most was the whole brain surgery situation. The daughter was involved in an accident, and somehow the story got to the point where the mother’s brain was exchanged with her daughter’s brain. Yes, you read that correctly! They actually performed brain surgery that resulted in the mother being in the daughter’s body, while the daughter ended up in the mother’s body. When I reached that part, I honestly had to pause and ask myself, “Wait, what is happening here?”
I tried to follow the story because I thought maybe everything would eventually make sense. I kept watching and telling myself, “Maybe the next episode will explain everything.” But instead of becoming clearer, the story seemed to become even more complicated. I found myself trying to remember who was who, whose body belonged to whom, and what had actually happened. At some point, I was no longer watching the drama for entertainment. I was watching it like I was trying to solve a difficult puzzle.
The brain surgery and body exchange made everything especially difficult for me to understand. Imagine watching a mother and daughter, knowing that their minds and bodies have somehow been switched. You then have to remember that the person you are seeing may not actually be the person whose body they are in. That alone was enough to confuse me. Every time I thought I understood something, another scene would make me question everything again.
I also found it difficult to become emotionally connected to the characters because I was spending so much time trying to understand what was happening. Usually, when I watch a Korean drama, I want to become interested in the characters’ lives, relationships, struggles, and emotions. I want to know what happens next. But with Doctor Shin, my biggest concern was simply trying to understand who was in whose body!
To be honest, I don't think I can say that the drama was completely bad. It may have had an interesting idea, and some people might enjoy the unusual storyline. The actors also did their best to bring the characters to life. However, for me personally, the story was just too confusing. I could not connect with it because I was constantly trying to figure out what was going on.
Seriously, the drama Doctor Shin became one of those dramas that I watched but still could not properly explain afterward. If someone asked me what the drama was about, I would probably just say, “There was an accident, they did brain surgery, and somehow the mother and daughter ended up in each other’s bodies.” Then I would probably stop there because explaining anything beyond that would confuse me even more!
My experience with Doctor Shin taught me that not every drama is going to be enjoyable or easy to understand for everyone. Sometimes you can try your best, watch every episode, pay attention to the story, and still finish the drama thinking, “What did I just watch?” For me, Doctor Shin was definitely one of those dramas. I tried to understand it, but honestly, I don't think I could have understood it even if I tried harder.
