A few months ago, we had the joy of gathering as a family to celebrate one of my uncles' birthdays. We all love him dearly—partly because he has earned that affection, and partly because of the resilience he has shown after suffering so much following the death of my aunt (his wife) back in 2015. He hasn't been the same since; while he appears cheerful and attentive, his eyes always hold a look of sadness. To make matters worse, the whole family was recently shaken when he was misdiagnosed with lung cancer. Although, thank God, it was later confirmed that the diagnosis was completely wrong, a rare condition was detected that causes one of his lungs to remain fully collapsed and unable to function properly. This took a heavy toll on his health and caused significant weight loss, but thanks to God, he has improved with treatment and care (he still has his ups and downs, but he’s hanging in there). So, when his birthday arrived and we saw he was doing much better, we wanted to treat him to a celebration. We brought cake, soft drinks, snacks—everything needed—and, of course, gathered together as a family.
Hace unos meses tuvimos la dicha de reunirnos en familia para celebrar el cumpleaños de uno de mis tíos, todos lo queremos mucho y le tenemos gran cariño, en parte porque él se lo ha ganado y en parte también por la resiliencia que ha mostrado luego de haber sufrido tanto tras la muerte de mi tía, su esposa, por allá en el 2015, desde entonces él no ha vuelto a ser el mismo, se muestra sonriente y atento pero sus ojos siempre están tristes, para colmo hace poco todos estuvimos muy conmocionados en la familia cuando a él le diagnosticaron erróneamente un cáncer de pulmón, y aunque gracias a Dios luego se confirmó que el diagnostico estaba totalmente errado, sí se detectó una enfermedad rara que hace que uno de sus pulmones esté totalmente contraído y no haga bien su trabajo, lo cuál deterioró mucho su salud e hizo que bajara mucho de peso, pero con tratamientos y cuidados ha mejorado, gracias a Dios (a veces tiene sus altos y bajos pero ahí va) así que cuando cumplió años y vimos que estaba bastante mejor ese día, quisimos agasajarlo. Llevamos pastel, refrescos, snacks, en fin, todo lo necesario, y además nos reunimos en familia.
There we were—the aunts, the nephews and nieces, and my cousin (his daughter)—ready to treat him to a special day. He looked much better and even ate quite a bit—something he hadn't really been doing up until then, as he hadn't had much of an appetite—but we truly had a wonderful family day eating, talking, reminiscing, and even watching one of the World Cup matches, which really livened up the celebration with our shouts of excitement.
Allí estábamos als tías, los sobrinos y mi prima (su hija), dispuestos a agasajarlo. Él se veía bastante mejor e incluso comió bastante, algo que él no estaba haciendo hasta entonces, no le provocaba comer mucho, pero de verdad pasamos un lindísimo día en familia comiendo, hablando, recordando y hasta viendo uno de los partidos del mundial, lo cuál animó mucho más la celebración con nuestros gritos de euforia.
And there he is among my aunts (the one in blue), looking very happy as we sing the birthday song; it truly brings us joy to see him so cheerful. I sincerely hope he makes a full recovery soon—God willing—so that we can have him with us for many more years, enjoying life with the family.
Y allí está él entre mis tías (el de azul) muy feliz a la hora de cantar la canción del cumpleaños, de verdad que nos complace verlo tan alegre, espero sinceramente que pronto se recupere totalmente, Dios mediante, para poder tenerlo muchos años con nosotros, disfrutando en la familia.
