This is one of the lesser-known stories by the Brothers Grimm—though it is true that the Barbie franchise once produced a rather toned-down adaptation of the tale—but now we are going to review and analyze the original version. 🤗
Esta es una de las historias menos conocidas de los hermanos Grimm, aunque es cierto que en una ocasión la franquicia Barbie hizo una adaptación bastante suavizada del cuento, pero ahora vamos a revisar y analizar la versión original 🤗
Overview/Resumen
The story concerns a king who had twelve very mysterious daughters; they all slept in the same large room, and at night their father had the door locked to prevent them from escaping. Yet, in the morning, the princesses' shoes would be found worn out and full of holes from so much dancing. The king needed to know where they went and how they managed it, so he issued a decree stating that any young man who could unravel the mystery of the princesses' nightly excursions could choose one of them to marry and would inherit the throne upon the king's death; however, if they failed to find the answer within three days, they would lose their lives. Many young men tried, but they fell asleep after drinking the wine given to them by the eldest princess—leaving them unable to solve the mystery—and consequently, they lost their lives.
La historia se trata de un rey que tenía doce hijas muy misteriosas, ya que todas dormían en una misma sala grande y por la noche su padre mandaba a cerrar con llave la puerta para que ellas no pudieran escapar, no obstante por la mañana los zapatos de las princesas amanecían gastados y agujereados de tanto bailar, y el rey necesitaba saber a dónde iban y cómo lo hacían, por esta razón lanzó un decreto que decía que aquel joven que lograra descifrar el misterio de hacia donde iban las princesas durante las noches podría elegir a cualquiera de ellas para casarse y tras la muerte del rey heredaría el trono, pero si al cabo de esos tres días aún no habían obtenido respuestas entonces perderían la vida. Muchos jóvenes lo intentaron pero se quedaron dormidos luego de beber el vino que les dio la princesa mayor y de esta manera no lograban descifrar nada, así que perdieron la vida.
However, a soldier who had been wounded in combat and could no longer serve in the army was wandering aimlessly until he encountered an old woman; she gave him a cloak of invisibility and some crucial advice: he was not to drink the wine offered by the eldest sister, but rather pretend to be asleep. He followed her instructions, placing a sponge under his tongue to absorb the wine. Thus, while feigning sleep, the soldier discovered that the eldest princess would strike her bed with her shoe, immediately opening a trapdoor through which they descended; the soldier donned his cloak of invisibility and followed them, discovering trees with branches of silver, gold, and diamond—from which he plucked branches as proof. The princesses then arrived at a lake where twelve boats, manned by twelve princes, awaited them; the princes ferried them to the opposite shore, where a castle stood and a ball was taking place, and there the princesses danced until their shoes were worn out.
Sin embargo un soldado que había sido herido en combate y ya no podía pertenecer al ejercito estaba vagando sin rumbo fijo hasta que se topó con una viejecita que le dio una capa de invisibilidad y un gran consejo, le dijo que no debía beber el vino que le diera la hermana mayor y luego debía hacerse el dormido. Así lo hizo él, se puso una esponja debajo de la lengua para que absorbiera el vino, De esta manera, mientras fingía estar dormido, el soldado descubrió que la princesa mayor golpeaba su cama con el zapato y enseguida se abría una compuerta por la que bajaban, el soldado se puso la capa de invisibilidad y se fue detrás de ellas, descubriendo árboles de ramas de plata, oro y diamante, pero el soldado iba tomando ramas de esos árboles para usarlas como prueba, luego las princesas llegaron a un lago en el que las estaban esperando doce barcas abordadas por doce príncipes que las trasladaron a la otra orilla en la cual había un castillo donde había un baile, allí las princesas bailaron hasta que sus zapatos se desgastaron.
When they returned to the royal palace, the soldier made sure to arrive before the princesses; he took off his cloak and lay down in his bed, so he aroused no suspicion. Afterward, he told the king everything and presented the magnificent tree branches as proof; the king then asked him to choose one of the princesses, and he chose the eldest to marry and eventually inherit the king's throne.
Cuando regresaron al palacio real, el soldado se aseguró de llegar primero que las princesas, se quitó la capa y se acostó en su cama, así que no generó sospechas. Posteriormente él le contó todo al rey y presentó las ramas magníficas de los árboles como prueba, así que el rey le pidió que eligiera a una de las princesas y él eligió a la mayor para casarse y heredar el tono del rey algún día.
My Opinion/Mi Opinión
At the outset, we encounter a scenario common to any context—whether real or literary—involving the struggle between control and rebellion inherent to youth: a father attempting to curb his daughters' natural desire for fun and recreation. Yet, boundaries were indeed necessary, as the princesses—especially the eldest—had grown so capricious that they remained unmoved even by the deaths of the princes who had tried to solve the mystery before the soldier. Those earlier princes had failed in their quest due to arrogance or a simple lack of attentiveness to their surroundings; they believed their royal status alone would suffice to win a princess's favor and secure the throne. The soldier, however, though initially lost, allowed an old woman to assist him; he heeded her advice and—crucially—took the precaution of gathering evidence to substantiate his claims.
Al inicio encontramos lo que suele suceder siempre y en cualquier contexto, bien sea real o literario, una batalla entre el control y la rebeldía cuando se trata de la juventud, el padre intenta contener el deseo natural de sus hijas de divertirse y buscar recreación, sin embargo es verdad que ellas necesitan límites pues se volvieron tan caprichosas, en especial la mayor, que ni siquiera se inmutan ante las muertes de los príncipes que intentaron descifrar el misterio antes que el soldado. No obstante estos soldados fracasaron en su empresa por soberbia o simplemente por no prestar atención al entorno, pensaban que su condición de príncipes sería suficiente para obtener el favor de alguna de las princesas y obtener el trono del rey, sin embargo el soldado estaba perdido en su momento pero se dejó ayudar por la anciana, tomó sus consejos y no solo eso, tomó la precaución de recopilar pruebas que le sirvieran como aval.
With this tale, the Brothers Grimm aim to show us that observation, prudence, perseverance, and cunning are crucial to the success of any endeavor; at the same time, however, it is important to heed the voice of experience, as the elderly often know exactly what to do or how to react. Furthermore, physical evidence—such as the princesses' worn-out shoes, the tree branches, and the goblet the soldier kept as proof—serves as a metaphor illustrating that human secrets always find a way to come to light.
Con este relato los hermanos Grimm pretenden demostrarnos que la observación, la prudencia, la constancia y la astucia son determinantes para lograr cualquier empresa, pero al mismo tiempo también es importante escuchar la voz de la experiencia, los ancianos a menudo siempre saben qué hacer o como reaccionar. Por otra parte la evidencia como los zapatos gastados de las princesa o las ramas de árboles y la copa que el soldado guardó como prueba, es una metáfora que denota que en la vida los secretos de los humanos siempre hayan la manera de salir a la luz.
In short, this story offers a valuable lesson—as do all the tales the Brothers Grimm have accustomed us to—teaching us about humility, persistence, and cunning. I hope you get the chance to read it 😃
