In this video, I introduce Problem 1 of the EM 304 (Mechanics of Materials) test that Dr. Judy Wood gave to her students on February 6, 2003, just 5 days after the Space Shuttle Columbia broke apart during re-entry on February 1, 2003. I also show live news coverage of the disaster, including footage (from 81 seconds after launch on January 16, 2003) of the foam insulation from the rocket booster striking the left wing at nearly a right angle, dustifying in the process. Dr. Judy Wood suspected right away that this was a severe impact and turned it into a thermal expansion problem for her students.
