MES Math Q/A 73: What is Thermal Expansion?

Thermal expansion is the tendency of materials to grow when heated: a bar's length changes by ΔL = α L ΔT (where α is the material's coefficient of thermal expansion). It happens because atoms are easier to pull apart than to push together, so as heat makes them vibrate harder, they swing farther outward than inward and their average spacing increases.
