When a grade doesn't define who you are as a student.
Hello Holos & Lotus friends, I hope you are doing very well. Throughout my university classes, I've had both very good and lower grades. This can cause anxiety and even a lack of motivation when you don't get good results. But something I take away from this first term is that everyone is different, and the way each person processes, analyzes, and integrates information is not the same as others. Yet, what happens when the low grades seem to outnumber the good ones? I think that's when we need to reflect and look for ways to improve, but never give up just because you got a bad grade.
In my case, I feel I perform better on written evaluations, especially because I really like writing and being able to develop my ideas on paper. But when it comes to oral presentations or very extensive topics, it is harder for me to grasp so much information. I think it happens to all of us that we are good at some things and not so much at others, but this doesn't mean that because something goes wrong, we've lost all chances of moving forward and passing our subjects. I know the pressure is quite high, but that is precisely the moment when we can see what we're made of and what tools we have to improve.
So far, I have understood the theoretical subjects except for the one related to neuropsychology; that one is quite dense, and it's hard to remember so much information. However, I always remind myself that I can improve and that there are still plenty of opportunities to get better grades. I might not end up among the top grades in the classroom, but I feel I take away the satisfaction of having given my best and knowing that I can do even more if I set my mind to it. I think nothing is impossible; you just have to keep practicing and being persistent.
Something that helps me dwell less on the pessimism of a bad streak of grades is remembering the things I have been able to learn. Not everything is about a high grade; we should also keep the learning we gain from the information we are studying. Maybe some people feel more confident and have a greater capacity for comprehension or better retention; however, this doesn't mean they are the smartest people or have greater capabilities than others. And that is an important point when we begin a university career or any other project that requires effort.
We all have different strategies or dynamics; biologically we are similar, but there are differences that strengthen us and allow us to stand out in different aspects. Something that helps me a lot is trusting that everything can turn out well and that I have the ability to learn even if it takes me a bit longer than others. We shouldn't get discouraged or feel less because of a grade; that does not define our learning capacity or our ability to be good professionals. We simply need to look for the strategies so that in our next project or exam we can do better, without losing self-confidence and without stopping to be persistent—both are key to moving forward and succeeding in life.
A grade is just a number, but your performance, perseverance, and desire to learn matter more than getting the title of best in the class. Everyone has the opportunity to stand out, but if something goes wrong, it doesn't mean it's the end; infinite possibilities still exist as long as we have life and health.
