To study or give up due to other basic needs that must be met?
Hello Holos & Lotus friends, I hope you are doing well. A few days ago, a "controversy" arose regarding a video of a young Venezuelan woman who claimed that everyone —making a generalization—, within Venezuela, we have the same opportunities to finish our university studies, and whoever doesn't do so is simply because they really don't want to. According to her, education within the country can also be obtained for free, emphasizing that she was setting aside politics and other factors that can indeed affect a person when deciding whether to study or if it's better to work.
In other videos, it seems she says that everyone in her immediate family holds degrees and that anyone who doesn't go to university basically does so because they don't want to. And it is very sad to see how someone jumps to conclusions without knowing personal problems, or even those issues that do affect us, such as the country's own economy and politics. One thing cannot be separated from the other; it is an interconnected whole where if one part doesn't work well, the rest ends up malfunctioning because basically everything is linked, and this is something people often fail to see when giving an opinion biased by our own privileges and personal histories.
In Venezuela, there is a problem that is not only economic but also social. We have gone through so much crisis that people decided, or were many times pushed to decide, that they could no longer continue studying, whether because they now have children to care for, because money is more urgently needed at home, and the time required for work consumes a large portion of the schedule that could otherwise be used for studying. There are many factors that in some cases may result from one's own decisions or the push of a society and economy so devastated that it makes us believe we all carry the exact same luggage, giving us the right to comment on anything on social media.
For many, being able to pay for basic needs like food or even rent somewhere is more important—as obvious as it may sound—than being able to go to a university or pay for a private one to obtain that longed-for degree. Many do not have the fortune of having the support of their surroundings, or the same luck as others who, even amidst the country's greatest moments of crisis, managed to earn their degree with all the effort that required. We cannot believe that our reality is the only one that exists and judge others' decisions from that standpoint; thinking this way is very lacking in empathy and realism.
Why, instead of pigeonholing people as "lazy" or saying they don't want to better themselves, don't we look at all the necessary points and from there create solutions instead of going around saying things that ultimately make no sense? Here, there should first be laws that protect you and help you study while working, just like in other countries where people work part-time and can study at the same time. The issue is not about wanting or not wanting to study; it is about realizing how harsh life is within this country, which forces you to weigh one decision over another because there are pressing needs waiting that cannot be pushed aside.
I think that yes, we can all eventually study, but we do not all live the same reality. There are people who must work—like the majority—because in this country money is never enough; it is always needed, not to mention that healthcare is almost a luxury we cannot afford. There are people who truly make a titanic effort to be at a university wanting to learn, improve themselves, and gain knowledge. The point is that if we let ourselves be carried away solely by our own experience, we are leaving aside the fact that we all live different realities, and often it is not that people don't want to study, but rather that it is economically almost impossible, along with a lack of time between work and responsibilities that demand immediate attention. It is a topic that gives one a lot to think about. 💭✍🏽
