The Year of the Dog is a 2022 independent film directed by Rob Grabow, Andrew McGinn, and Michael Peterson. It actually popped up for me on a movie platform, and I was drawn to the film's title and how it might intertwine with the life of a man struggling with an addiction. This man's name is Matt (Rob Grabow), and from the beginning, we see his physical and emotional deterioration as he leaves a jail cell after committing a relatively minor crime. In a way, being in prison was his way of escaping the abyss of alcoholism.

Matt meets Fred (Michael Spears), a former addict and Alcoholics Anonymous sponsor who offers him support to help him rehabilitate, especially now that, after 15 years of not seeing his mother, she is on the verge of death and her final wish is to see him one last time. For Matt, it's hard to resist his old habits, but he holds onto the hope of reuniting with his mother and seeing her, even if just to say goodbye in a healthier way, without his addiction getting in the way. However, the process is tough, and necessity will lead him to make decisions he won't entirely like.

As fate would have it, a Husky dog crosses Matt's path. The two connect immediately, and in a way, a healing process begins for Matt. He names the dog Yup'ik and takes him to his temporary living quarters. The dog becomes everything he needs—something to give his love, support, and attention to, beyond his own problems. In some way, they also end up participating in dog weight-pulling competitions, where the dog that can move heavy loads the furthest wins.

I didn't like this part of the story, even though I know there was surely no animal abuse; just the idea of seeing the dog struggle to move and having that promoted as a competition made me very uncomfortable. Still, the connection between the two is special, because they understand each other even without words, and both give each other the necessary support and the love they lack to move forward. It's a story that doesn't romanticize addiction, though I did find it quite hard to believe that Matt could change so rapidly in such a short time, making it look like something easy to handle.

It's an easy-to-watch, hour-and-a-half story with no famous actors or grandiose monologues. But it leaves you with the hope that we can experience difficult situations and go through very rough times, yet still push forward—with a lot of difficulty, yes, but with the hope of a new life. It's a change that isn't simple, but it leads an individual dealing with problems like addiction to look beyond their mistakes and recognize that an opportunity can exist as long as they believe in it. It clings to the hope that life isn't easy, but it gives you good things that allow you to keep going and make the burden lighter.

It might not be the best movie, but it had good moments to pass the time and reflect on such complicated issues that human beings can face. 💭

The Year of the Dog.
