Hello movie and TV show lover friends 🧡. Today I bring you a new review of a movie I was eagerly looking forward to seeing. Verity, based on the book by author Colleen Hoover, is a psychological thriller-drama that immerses us in the world of an aspiring writer and a famous author, where both worlds collide to show us that the bad guys aren't always the real problem, and that there are times when truth and fantasy can be confused. That's what happens inside this book, which hooked me from the very first moment, but didn't make me connect as much with the film, despite having excellent actors.
The story takes us into the life of Lowen Ashleigh (Dakota Johnson), a struggling writer at the beginning of her career who has financial problems and needs to find a good job soon to survive. Amidst life's coincidences, she meets a man under very strange circumstances; he helps her, and although she thinks she will never see him again, it turns out to be Jeremy Crawford (Josh Hartnett), the husband of Verity Crawford (Anne Hathaway). In a meeting, they agree to take over and continue a project that Verity herself was writing before suffering a severe accident that left her bedridden, unable to speak, or care for herself.
The story captivated me immensely when I read the book—although Hoover isn't one of the greatest writers, she certainly has stories outside the romance genre. Verity is a story full of intrigue, loose ends to tie up, and characters who project a lifestyle that hides the reality of their own dark secrets. When I saw there was going to be a movie, I was excited, although I also went in predisposed to the idea that it could be terrible. Anne Hathaway's performance was very good, even though it's not one of her best works. Dakota Johnson really plays the character's exact role, but she doesn't leave a huge impression within the story. Josh Hartnett plays the mysterious husband who starts developing mixed feelings for Dakota, but you don't feel a very strong chemistry.
What is genuinely great about the movie is its atmosphere; the locations and scene shots are very incredible, and the soundtrack also adds more mystery and intrigue to the film. However, I feel like the adaptation doesn't really do justice to the book. The book is a bit more exciting; maybe the casting choice wasn't the best, or director Michael Showalter didn't do the best job with this story. Nevertheless, for those who don't have context because they didn't read or know anything about the book, the movie might still thrill them.
I really enjoy reading the books first and then watching the movies, but it's somewhat disappointing when the movie doesn't do justice to the source material. In this case, I think for some people it can be intriguing and they might like it, just as others might not. What you need to know is that this is not a story about a forbidden romance at all; it's more of a story where the characters' psyches—especially Verity's—might be somewhat affected for various reasons. This leads the plot to focus on portraying her as a very wicked villain with an obsession for her husband's love, but you have to watch it until the end to draw your own conclusions. I hope you get to see it; I'd love to read your comments on what you thought of this movie if you've already seen it. 👀🎬💭
