Gratitude for celebrating another year of life.
Celebrating another year of life and growth is not something to be taken lightly. We will not always be the same age, nor will we experience the same things from one year to the next. For as long as I can remember, my favorite day of the year has been my birthday, and it’s not because I spend it surrounded by people or lots of gifts; I simply feel it as a special day and as an opportunity to reflect and look back.
I remember that during my childhood, birthdays were always full of love, togetherness, and delicious food to enjoy as a family. My grandmother was alive back then, and she was one of the people I loved most, someone who loved me back unconditionally. I think that is why, after her death, I felt I needed to cherish the moments with my mom and siblings even more, because at some point, nothing would ever be the same again.
Next year I reach an age that once felt far away. It is not an age I feel uncomfortable with—turning thirty is a wonderful thing, and I think it reminds me of everything I’ve lived through, especially those moments when I thought I wouldn't make it this far. I think it’s an age that feels somewhat serious, but I still feel like I’m twenty. Things haven’t changed much, except there is a bit more self-imposed pressure and a strong desire to experience the things I've let pass by, remaining on hold over time.
I look around me and see many different realities. At my age, I think I have lived enough to know that time is short, and that there are pains you need to walk through, while others aren't even worth the effort. I deeply value having good health and being able to enjoy more autonomy than before. These are small things that make every day feel like the first—a new opportunity to start over and not let fear and uncertainty steal the joy from the things I love to do.
Birthdays are deeply special dates, even if not everyone sees them that way. It is a moment when we begin a fresh start, allowing us to fill ourselves with gratitude for what we have lived and for what we have yet to experience. Everyone celebrates in different ways, and I believe that as long as you feel you are enjoying the moment and the valuable people in your life right now, you have everything to be grateful for.
On my next birthday, I hope to feel good about myself, to be with the people I love, and to reach it in good health and well-being. There is still a long way to go, but time moves very fast, and I try to make every day count as something that was worth it for me, rather than focusing on what others want. Always remembering that life is fleeting and that there is always the possibility of no longer being here, but as long as I am on this earth, I hope to live a life that fills me with gratitude and pride.
