Wednesday Walk

Wednesday walk, San Biagio church and square, and shopping for vegetables./ Paseo del miércoles, iglesia y plaza de San Biagio, y compra de verduras.

Good morning, blog friends, and happy Wednesday! Here I am again for my usual Wednesday walk. Today we’re back in Pistoia, where I went to run some errands—or rather, where I went because that’s where our lawyer is based; lately, due to disputes regarding my stepdaughter's child support and her mother's bad behavior, we’ve had to see him quite often. Anyway, while my husband was meeting with the lawyer, I took the opportunity to wander around the area. I know Pistoia fairly well, but today, during my stroll, I discovered a delightful little square called Piazzetta San Biagio. It was once a tiny hamlet within the city and—as you can see—it sits right in the historic center, boasting a classic medieval look with stone paving and surrounding old houses. Above all, it takes its name from the small church there; unfortunately, I could only capture the exterior, featuring an old doorway adorned with the polychrome decorations typical of Pistoia’s churches—the famous "zebra-striped" ones. The church is dedicated to San Biagio, one of the city's most beloved saints. It is one of the smallest churches around; built in the Romanesque style around the year 1000—when the city walls were still fully intact—it was likely just a small chapel back then. I understand it isn't used for daily services today and has undergone renovations, so it can only be visited on specific days. It was a shame to find it closed; I adore churches—even though I’m not a believer, I have great respect for and am fascinated by sacred places.

They also host art exhibitions and small events in this little church; I was really struck by the old door—I find antique doors fascinating. Anyway, to continue my outing, I went to a place that was far less ancient and charming: a nearby supermarket. I’m not sure if a trip to the supermarket counts as a walk, but I think it does—at least a little—because I spent so much time there, especially in the produce section. I found a huge variety of fresh vegetables and, naturally, took the opportunity to stock up. I returned to my husband with a good supply of veggies for the coming days, so it was a productive walk—plus, vegetables are good for you! See you soon, blog friends!
