Breakfast of Champions, a freewrite

A day does not go by but with some time carved out for my breakfast. This is my church, my religion. Breakfast is sacrosanct. Pastries are my love language.

I begin each day with a salad. That’s right, a salad. When lettuce is abundant in my garden, my salad is huge. Other days, when my harvest has been skimpy, it might be only a leaf or two. In very dry greenery seasons, fruit will have to do, or a Wegman’s-procured avocado. But every single day, I begin with a salad of some sort.

I know people who would look askance at this very sensible way to begin a day, carnivores mostly. It certainly keeps me regular, no complaints in that department. Can a carnivore boast the same? It’s what comes after the salad that others might find me in grave error, especially carnivores, those carb-phobic self righteous numskulls.

During the salad course, I peruse my emails, all three of them. One of those is AOL if you can believe that. I love that account and its nearly 5000 unread emails, many of them left unread so that I would get back to them when I could. Old friends searching us out from Germany, old employees wanting to reconnect. I have twenty years of saved emails to get back to someday. That’s going on my bucket list.

On to the morning entree!

I must have a sweet with my morning half-cup of coffee. Not terribly sweet, though. Nor horribly big. Lots of fat, butter preferred. Enough to dribble down my chin is always nice. I go through a lot of butter. It’s the one and only thing in a grocery store that I buy extra of if it’s on sale.

A bite of sweet swished down with a whoosh of hot coffee. Bite, swoosh. Bite swoosh. I make sure the last bite of pastry is the perfect bite, just the right balance of all the components. I savor that last chomp fully. Then the very last swoosh of coffee. And that is that.

This is my entry to @mariannewest's daily freewrite challenge. Today's prompt is no time for breakfast.

  • I can't face a salad for breakfast. Lunch, yes. Dinner, yes. But not first thing in the morning. I eat meat nearly every day, and do not apologize for it. Nor do I tell vegans and vegetarians they ought to eat like I do, because I find it very annoying when they preach at me about eating like they do. Eat what is available, what you like and what you can afford. (Bearing in mind, of course, that not all three of those qualifications may happen at once.)

I do like salad, but probs not for brekky. I do like savoury - I think congee is my favourite! - but tend to yoghurt, homemade muesli and berries or in winter, oranges...

I have nothing against carbs, @owasco, but if I had a carb breakfast they'd probably have to scrape me off the floor. I need protein or fat with my carbs. I'm not diabetic but I do handle sugar (glucose) oddly.

As for butter...we go through bins of it. I especially load it up in my husband's food because he can use the extra calories, and he doesn't like big meals. So I concentrate those calories as much as possible.

Eggs, also. We eat eggs, mostly scrambled and cooked in...butter!

You're right. The lettuce just doesn't look appetizing as my first meal of the day. Interesting. Maybe because you grow it you have a special relationship :)

    I'm a carnivore!

My "normal" for breakfast right now is yogurt with a sprinkle of ceylon cinnamon and if there are blackberries or grapes in the frig, a few of those on top. I usually have a side of some sort of nuts, the kind of which rotates.

I was trying to remember if I ever had salad for breakfast. I can't remember a time, but I'm sure I can't remember every breakfast I ever had. I may have had some leftover taco salad a morning or two.... maybe.

I save my carnivoring for lunch and supper. 😄

Oh... and pass the butter please! I love that stuff. When I was growing up we used more margarine (yuck) but I didn't know better. My Dad loved butter because he was raised with it, but when I would try a tiny taste of it, back then compared to margarine I thought it tasted strange. Now though, all I want is real butter and no skimping!

  • Your description of that morning pastry made my mouth water. : ) It reminded me of a little patisserie we found in Montreal. My Mom is the same way with butter. Her freezer looks a little like the vaults at Fort Knox because she has so many packages of Kerry Gold in it.
