Lately, I seem to be more sensitive to the cold, and today, even though I dressed very warmly, I still felt it. We set out when it was 3 degrees, and on the road, the temperature drops another degree or two. Riding to Lobos means covering 140 km by bike.
It's really tough...
In cycling, when riding into the wind, we always form the famous "staircase." But the rider in fourth place sometimes can’t enjoy the benefits of riding inside the pack. And that was my situation today. By putting my teammates first, I ended up in last place and paid the price. With 10 km to go before reaching Lobos, I had no choice but to shout out and say… “Guys, make a little room for me in the pack because I’m running on fumes.” I moved up to second place and was able to reach my destination—or rather, the halfway point.
After recharging our energy with a hearty breakfast, we set off on the return trip. The sun was already out, and luckily the wind was at our backs for a while. The ride back was quite pleasant, except for the last 33 km. When we reached the town of Cañuelas, all my defenses—or whatever you want to call them—crumbled. We each headed home as planned, and thanks to my partner Damián, who covered the second leg for me, I was able to reach my house at two per hour. I was extremely exhausted but happy to have finished. I think the drop in performance had to do with the long run I did on Friday—more than 25 km with Zuni. As they say… If you like peaches, you’ve got to put up with the fuzz 😂
Thanks to the universe, there were some delicious treats to share at home. The Fernet and Coke was a huge relief.
I was supposed to write up the recap of the Vuelta a España today, but I didn’t have time. We’ll probably get to that sometime this week.
Happy Sunday, everyone 🧉
