It was around the year 2000 and, 26 years younger than I am now, I was deeply in love with a girl from Misiones, Mabel was her name, whose charms led me to do things and go to places where I sometimes didn't have the dimension or awareness of how dangerous it was. I had a very good relationship with her brothers, and with one in particular. His name was Antonio and he was the oldest brother. I don't remember having told this story before, but it's true.

On a regular weekend, I go visit my girlfriend and, while we were quietly watching TV, her brother shows up and tells us he's going to throw a dinner and that he invited relatives who lived in the Buenos Aires conurbano. He said: "I invited Pepito and Pepita and their families." And I'm sure that's exactly how it went, given how careless the guy was. The thing is, Pepito and Pepita had a ton of relatives, and before we knew it, the conventillo we were in was packed with strangers, eating and drinking like there was no tomorrow. To give you some context, basically all of Argentina's litoral region — Corrientes, Misiones, and maybe Entre Ríos — are, as they say, people with a very short fuse. They don't beat around the bush, and at the first sign of trouble things go straight to blows and, as a last resort, out comes the knife too. Because of my personality, obviously that's not me, but Antonio's brothers, they sure were.

Between gossip and back-and-forth remarks, and with a few too many drinks in everyone's system, things started getting a bit heavy across the different little gatherings happening around the table. In the middle of the early morning, Antonio's brother shows up in the dining room, where most of the people were, holding a machete — which is like a long knife — saying that down on the sidewalk in the Constitución neighborhood, someone had said something to him. He was inviting some of the people there to go down and confront the situation. Apparently, while someone was at one of the windows, a glass or cup fell on a passerby, and that's what set off the whole commotion.

Imagine the adrenaline I was feeling, especially being someone like me who's all about love and peace. Everyone was gearing up for the big showdown. Antonio's brother, who wanted to go down right away, [and some who were with him] — but luckily others were trying to calm things down, telling him not to go down because something unexpected was going to happen. Women screaming and kids crying, and just imagine the terrible chaos [quilombo] of that moment. My girlfriend, a girl no older than 18, was also caught up in the back-and-forth and ready to go down if it came to that.

I remember that in one of the rooms there was a person who was terribly drunk, sleeping on the floor. He was an older guy, no more than 40, who had gotten drunk really early and I don't think he even made it to dinner. Something clicked in my brain and I said: I have to do the same thing. I clearly felt cornered because I couldn't go out to the street given the terrible danger out there, so I decided to lie down in one of the beds, surrounded by crying kids, and pretend to be the drunk guy who'd passed out. I was far from drunk, and an insane level of adrenaline was running through me. What the hell am I doing in this situation, without having asked for any of it. Furious at my cuñado Antonio, who put me in this level of danger for absolutely no reason.

I witnessed the whole quilombo, playing dead asleep. In the end, the guy with the machete went down and some people went with him, you could hear shouting and some rocks being thrown at the house. But luckily the police showed up and defused the situation, and they managed to get Antonio's brother back inside the house. He was truly out of his mind and wanted to go down no matter what. But like every drunk, after a while they went back to drinking and talking about what had happened. While I was still in bed pretending to be asleep, I hear them say "let's go dancing," and that's when I took the chance to get ready and make my way out. Once the most dangerous ones left to go dancing, the women and some kids were still awake in the early Buenos Aires morning, I went straight down the dirty stairs of the conventillo in the Constitución neighborhood and managed to flag down a taxi. I remember giving directions really nervously, and luckily it wasn't too far from home. I mean, I knew the way back. At some point the taxi driver tells me he has to take a detour because there was some kind of street closure, which I apparently reacted to pretty aggressively, telling him I knew the way and to please not take me for a ride. "Hacer pasear" (literally "taking someone for a walk") is a term we Argentines use when taxi drivers take you through places that don't make sense, just to run up the fare. That was my great free experience, thrown into a terrible quilombo as we Argentines say, without asking for any of it. Some time later, the pretty girl left me, with a line I think I've already told before in another situation: "You have nothing to offer me..." Thank god that's how it went, because I probably got saved from something I didn't want in my life... I'll take the chance to invite @tonyes, @arribaeltelon, and @jlufer to join the initiative. Happy day to everyone.
