The Canyon Whose Name Is Written on the Walls: Yazılı Canyon / Adı Duvarlara Yazılan Kanyon: Yazılı Kanyon ( EN-TR)

IMG20260905153129.jpg Hello, fellow travelers!

Now, let me take you to the coldest waters in the Mediterranean region. I’ve ventured into cold water a few times before. At first, I hadn't believed what people said about it—but once I got in, I realized they were right. Taking a dip in the icy waters of Yazlık Canyon was truly an adventure that required courage. We set out one weekend with a group of nature-loving friends to experience this adventure for ourselves.

Merhabalar Gezginci Ailesi

IMG20260905140705.jpg Even though it was early autumn, the weather was warm. We set off from Antalya center around nine o'clock. Our destination was the Sütçüler district of Isparta. It is about two hours away from Antalya. Our destination is located within the borders of Yazılı Canyon Nature Park. We came to Sütçüler district of Isparta province to find the park. From here we reached the village called Çandır. We passed through the village and reached the starting point of a forested land.

Sonbaharın başlarında olmamıza rağmen hava sıcaktı. Saat dokuz gibi, Antalya merkezden yola çıktık. Gideceğimiz yer, Isparta'nın Sütçüler ilçesindeydi. Antalya'ya yaklaşık iki saat uzaklıktadır. Varacağımız yer, Yazılı Kanyon Tabiat Miili Parkın sınırları içinde yer alıyor. Parkı bulmak için Isparta ilinin Sütçüler ilçesine geldik. Buradan Çandır adı verilen köye ulaştık. Köyün içinden geçerek ormanlık bir arazinin başlangınç noktasına ulaştık.

Yazılı Canyon consists of a deep valley carved by the Yeşildere stream—a continuation of the Göksu Stream, which is a tributary of the Aksu River that flows into the Mediterranean—winding through approximately 10 kilometers of forested terrain. Connecting the Köprüçay and Aksu rivers, which cut through the western Taurus Mountains, the canyon stands out for its natural, historical, and cultural significance. Within the nature park, there are sections that served as places of worship during the Byzantine era; these areas feature altars and ancient inscriptions carved into the rock face. Known as the "rock inscriptions," this section is situated near the edge of a steep drop-off. The path here is also known as the legendary "King's Road." Because of the inscriptions carved into the rocks, the canyon was named Yazılı Kanyon (Inscribed Canyon). Our hike takes us through the forest, amidst majestic mountains and dense vegetation, and occasionally requires us to walk directly through the water. Along the way, water erosion has created pools of various sizes amidst the rocks and moss. There are stretches where we struggle to navigate over the water rushing against the stones, and in some sections, we even have to swim to reach a stretch of flat, dry ground.

IMG20260905124437.jpg

IMG20260905124955.jpg We make our way along a wide dirt path that winds gently uphill through the pine trees skirting the canyon. Below, the waters of the stream and canyon flow alongside the road. As we advance, we occasionally find ourselves at the edge of precipices. The color and clarity of the water reveal just how clean and natural it is; the rushing water crashes against massive boulders, creating a magnificent, frothy spectacle. The pine trees lining the dirt path are nearly uniform in height and arranged so beautifully that they create a postcard-perfect view. During the hike, whenever we come across natural pools that look inviting, we plunge into the canyon's cold waters. The water is indeed very cold; we struggled to get in at first. Some of our friends even dipped their feet in and immediately wanted to pull them out. Here is a small tip: when entering such cold water, don't go in slowly. You should jump right in the moment you see the water; it creates a shock, certainly, but it is the easiest way to enter. Your body reacts, and you feel an urge to get out immediately, but if you hold on, your body quickly adjusts. In fact, such cold water is excellent for your health. And this is the very spot where we first took the plunge...

IMG20260905124702.jpg

IMG20260905123949.jpg As we move along the course of the flowing water, we are surrounded by lush vegetation; I encountered plants and thorny shrubs I had never seen before. In this area dense with pine trees, ancient plane, cedar, and elm trees—which seem to defy time—provide us with shade throughout the hike. We also encounter breathtaking scenery of unparalleled beauty. To cross a section marked by steep ravines, a bridge made of colorful iron scaffolding has been constructed. Looking down from this bridge into the gorge and along the path of the water reveals stunning vistas; the bridge effectively serves as an observation deck. When crowds gather here, people line up to take photos. The greenery clinging to the mountains and the white clouds in the sky create a magnificent landscape. Another reason for the bridge's popularity is its proximity to the temple and rock inscriptions along the "King's Road."

IMG20260905121905.jpg As we advance toward the canyon, we draw closer to the cold waters, leaving behind the legendary King's Road we had been walking. The path gradually narrows in the direction of the flowing water. We traverse challenging stretches within the canyon, navigating past vegetation, trees, and towering cliffs. Although we occasionally veer away from the water along the route we have forged ourselves, we can still sense the murmuring of the Göksu Stream. As we hike through the canyon, we encounter springs fed by clean, natural water welling up from underground sources. All these spring waters eventually flow into the Karacaören Dam Lake. Flowing year-round without ever drying up, the stream has carved out numerous pools of varying sizes within the canyon. Driven by heavy rainfall, the stream’s flow is at its peak during October and November. By the end of March, the water surges, rushing along with great force and volume.

IMG20260905124344 (1).jpg Let us look at a couple of lines from Epictetus's poem. I was curious to see how he articulated the importance of freedom. "O traveler, make ready for the journey and set forth, knowing this: True freedom lies in a person's character. The measure of one's freedom is found within one's own nature. If the free person is sincere in their resolve And honest of heart—these are the qualities that define the individual; It is through these that the free person rises—not through errors. O traveler, though Epictetus was born of a slave mother, He soared above all others like an eagle, his spirit worthy of admiration for its wisdom."

IMG20260905124418.jpg The canyon within the nature park truly bears the traces of history. Moreover, its unique flora and captivating scenery make exploring it a delightful experience. As the stream flows, small pools form amidst the large boulders. The dazzling formations and the frothy, ice-cold water create a mesmerizing spectacle that is a joy to behold.

IMG20260905124621.jpg We set out with our nature-loving friends to venture deep into the canyon. As we walked downstream, the hiking trails began to disappear. After walking about 10 kilometers, we arrived at a pool formed amidst the trees and vegetation; the water here was perhaps the coldest part of the stream. Only my spouse and I dared to enter the water. The depth reaches five meters where the pool flows onward. The vegetation and moss clinging to the rocky edges beautifully reveal the natural character of the setting. The fresh water is so clean and soothing that I dive right in, ignoring the cold. After a brief chat and a short break, we wrap up our excursion. It was time to head back.

IMG20260905140309.jpg Our return journey was a bit faster. Since we had already seen the spots we passed, we skipped the stops for taking photos. However, on the way back, we did get into the water in the small pools that had formed. As I mentioned earlier, because this place is located slightly inland within the Mediterranean region, it boasts the coldest waters. Experiencing this adventure was a great pleasure for us. Even though some of our friends merely dipped their feet in and quickly stepped out, they—just like us—got to experience this adventure. Until we meet again on future adventures, stay close to nature and filled with love.
