I often go to Michelena Park in my city, Maracay, to recharge with nature’s energy, since it’s close to where I live. It’s a refuge for birds and other animals, such as iguanas and lizards, many species of insects, and small mammals like squirrels that live in the lush trees.
I’ve made it a point to go there twice a week to walk and exercise. And I complement these activities with photography.
There are many species of trees; I can identify some of them because they’re very characteristic of my country’s flora.
The flamboyant tree (Delonix regia) is one of the most striking trees, thanks to its orange flowers and abundant fruit—large, elongated pods that cover the ground when they ripen and fall.
There are also tamarind trees (Tamarindus indica) and jobo trees (Spondias mombi), which are very tall and leafy, and whose fruits are very appetizing.
The samanes (Samanea saman), with their sturdy trunks and large branches, and the araguaneyes, with their yellow flowers, also stand out in the landscape. The jabillo (Hura crepintans) is one of the most abundant trees in the park; with its thorny trunk and fruits that make a popping sound when they open, it is very easy to identify.
As I walked along the trails, I saw and heard many birds singing: canaries, cristofue (known in other countries as benteveo), thrushes, and even small hawks, but I find it difficult to photograph them because they’re usually perched on tree branches.
However, there are some birds that are commonly found in the park—even though they are migratory birds—that forage for food in pairs among the grasslands, and I can get a little closer to them. When they feel threatened, they run or take flight only to land again. These are what we call stone curlews.

But this morning I came face-to-face with some visitors I’d never seen in the park before.
Three goats were walking very close together, and when they saw me, they approached me with a very curious—and, to me, rather funny—air about them. They stood there motionless for a moment, and I, of course, took the opportunity to take some pictures of them.
When I tried to get a little closer, they moved away. I didn’t see anyone with them, watching over them.
I imagine they were left there to eat and that someone would come back for them later. It was a beautiful encounter.
I finished my walk by taking some photos of cashew trees (Anacardium occidentale) that were already bearing fruit. Both the pseudofruit—which is juicy and astringent—and the true fruit—which is a nut—are edible. But they weren’t ripe yet, so I’ll stop by in a few days, and I hope to be able to harvest some.
On the way back, the mountains looked wonderful under a cloudy sky, because we’ve had very heavy rains these past few days. I took the opportunity to snap these photos to wrap up my tour of the park.

Una sorpresa en el parque.
Con frecuencia voy al Parque Michelena en mi ciudad, Maracay, para llenarme de la energía de la naturaleza, aprovechando que queda cerca de donde vivo. Es un refugio para las aves y otros animales, como las iguanas y las lagartijas, muchas especies de insectos y también pequeños mamíferos como las ardillas que viven en los frondosos árboles.
Me he propuesto ir dos veces a la semana para caminar y hacer ejercicios. Y complemento estas actividades con la fotografía.
Hay muchas especies de árboles; algunos los identifico porque son muy característicos de la flora de mi país.
El flamboyán (Delonix regia) es uno de los que más destaca por sus flores de color naranja y sus abundantes frutos, unas grandes vainas alargadas que cubren el suelo cuando maduran y caen.
También hay árboles de tamarindo (Tamarindus indica) y el jobo (Spondias mombi) que son muy altos y frondosos y sus frutos son muy apetecibles.
Los samanes (Samanea saman) con sus fuertes troncos y grandes ramas, y los araguaneyes, con sus flores amarillas, también destacan en el paisaje. El jabillo (Hura crepintans), es uno de los más abundantes en el parque; con su tronco espinoso y sus frutos que suenan al abrirse, es muy fácil de identificar.
Mientras caminaba por los senderos, veía y escuchaba el canto de muchos pájaros: canarios, cristofue llamado en otros países benteveo, tordos y hasta pequeños gavilanes, pero se me hace difícil fotografiarlos porque generalmente están en las ramas de los árboles.
Pero hay unas aves que generalmente se encuentran en el parque, aunque son aves migratorias, que andan buscando comida en parejas, dentro de los pastizales, y a las cuales me puedo acercar un poco. Cuando se ven amenazadas, corren o levantan vuelo para volverse a posar. Son los que llamamos alcaravanes.

Pero en esta mañana me encontré de frente con unos visitantes que por primera vez observo en el parque.
Tres cabras caminaban muy juntas y, cuando me vieron, en una actitud muy curiosa, que me pareció además graciosa, se acercaron hasta donde yo estaba. Se mantuvieron un momento sin moverse y yo, por supuesto, aproveché para tomarle fotografías.
Cuando intenté acercarme un poco, se alejaron. No vi a ninguna persona con ellas, cuidándolas. Me imagino que las dejaron allí para que comieran y luego las vendrían a buscar. Fue un hermoso encuentro.
Terminé de hacer mi recorrido tomando unas fotografías a unos árboles de merey (Anacardium occidentale) que ya estaban fructificando. Tanto el pseudofruto, que es jugoso y astringente, como el verdadero fruto, que es una nuez, son comestibles. Pero aún no estaban maduros, así que pasaré dentro de unos días, y espero poder cosechar alguno.
De regreso, las montañas se veían maravillosas, bajo un cielo nublado, porque estos días han sido de lluvias muy intensas. Aproveché para tomar estas fotografías, para terminar este recorrido por el parque.
