The portal is open
Four children run through the forest under a starry sky. Darkness is falling; contact with the world beyond death—that portal separating the living from the spirits, that veil visible only to those exalted souls—may open for just one night to everyone else.
A few years ago, a good soul turned into a dark being when he made a decision that would change the lives of an entire family and the community where they lived. He let himself be consumed by anger and hatred and extinguished the light in his heart.
The wheat harvest was a joyful occasion where everyone took part in grinding the grain and making the golden flour to sustain their families: the bread and cakes that satisfied their hunger.
The festivities were held in honor of nature, to ensure a bountiful harvest, because nature would soon change its face. Winter’s cold, white veil would cover the forests and fields. For the next three months, they would survive on what the earth had already provided.
Samuel was the head of a close-knit family: his wife Ana, his children José, Tomás, and Libia, and his parents Antonio and María. They lived in a large house, and their wheat crop had always been the most vigorous and productive in the region. This year, everything was going very well. The ears of wheat were beginning to form among the green leaves, swaying in the cold wind that had already begun to blow. It wouldn’t be long before the grain began to fill out.
But one night, something happened that changed the course of events. While Samuel was meeting with his friends at the tavern, an argument broke out. A petty remark was the start of it all.

A man sitting at the bar, facing a mug of beer, spoke in a low, deep voice.
Samuel, people say you have a pact with dark forces to protect your lands. Every year you harvest your grain in full, while on other plots we suffer losses.
I don’t need the darkness; the honest, dedicated work of my entire family is what makes the difference.
You’re saying that many of us don’t know how to farm.
Hours of beer drinking had inflamed tempers, and while a few friends supported Samuel, others sided with the man who had started the argument. The spark of discord had already been lit, and this man with a shifty gaze—a stranger—disappeared from the scene as a heated argument escalated into violence.
The next day, some of the plants on Samuel’s plot began to wither. A black, powdery fungus that came from the ground first covered the stem, then the leaves, and finally the ears of corn.
Nothing could stop this disease, and the family watched helplessly as their entire crop was lost.
“What are we going to do now, Samuel?” Ana asked.
“There’s nothing we can do now; we don’t have time to replant.”
And as he said this, he felt his anger and hatred toward everyone who had been at the tavern that night grow until it turned into absolute darkness. He could no longer distinguish between those who had supported him and those who had attacked him. They were all to blame for this misfortune.
And, giving in to evil, he went out under cover of the dark night and completely burned the region’s wheat crops.
All the families were left destitute as winter approached, and although there were no witnesses to prove that Samuel had done it, many accused him.
Samuel decided he had to flee, but his family refused to go with him. He was no longer the good, responsible son, husband, and father they had known. They were afraid of him.
And he disappeared one winter day; some said he had drowned in the river, others that he had frozen to death in the forest and become food for the wolves. Still others believed that the guardian spirits of nature were holding him in a cave—invisible to living beings but visited by evil spirits—so that he might bear witness to the sin he had committed.
After this harsh winter, the family stayed in the village doing what they did best: farming the land.
Today is October 31; the harvest season is coming to an end. Sanhaim, the beginning of winter, is here, and the gateway between the earthly world and the spirit world will be open.
Ana, accompanied by her children, follows her grandchildren to celebrate this moment, as is customary. Gathered around a bonfire, whose flames seem to dance to the rhythm of the music, the entire village has come together, and with songs and dances, they welcome the spirits, whose shadows begin to emerge from the fog.
But for Ana and her family, tonight holds a very special significance: the chance to see and speak with Samuel’s spirit. That will give them the certainty and peace of mind that he did not abandon them and that he is at peace. They have tried all these years, without success, but today is different. The stars in the sky and the subtle scent of the hazelnut tree’s flowers have signaled this to them, accompanying them until the moment they can meet.
