On Sunday, I went for a walk around Lake Czerniańskie. I’ll show you more photos from this autumn walk around the reservoir soon, but today we’re taking a closer look at the Wisła Czarne dam, where another stage of modernization is currently underway. Parts of the structure have clearly turned into a construction site, while fresh concrete sections and preparations for further work can already be seen around the spillway. Despite the renovation, the place still looks impressive – especially in autumn, with constantly changing light over the reservoir.
Te ostatnie będą później wykorzystywane do obserwacji i kontroli stanu technicznego zapory.
🇬🇧 What exactly is being modernized?
The most visible work is taking place around the spillway. This structure is responsible for safely releasing excess water during high-water events and when the reservoir reaches its maximum operating level. However, this year’s project goes much further. It also includes work on the dam’s sealing screens, restoration of the geodetic benchmark network, and installation of crack gauges and new piezometers. These instruments will later be used to monitor the technical condition of the dam. The photos make it clear that this is not simply a cosmetic renovation, but substantial work on some of the structure’s key elements.
🇵🇱 Około 12 milionów złotych i prace do grudnia
🇬🇧 Around PLN 12 million and work scheduled until December
The current stage of the project is worth around PLN 12 million gross. According to an announcement from Polish Waters dated October 5, this stage is scheduled to be completed in December 2026. It continues earlier modernization work completed in 2025, so the upgrade of the entire structure is being carried out in several stages. The dam itself has an important practical role: the Wisła Czarne reservoir provides flood protection and also supplies water to Wisła, Ustroń and Skoczów.
🇵🇱 Jezioro Czerniańskie i Zamek Prezydenta
🇬🇧 Lake Czerniańskie and the Presidential Castle
The renovation is the main story here, but it is difficult to ignore the scenery. From the dam, Lake Czerniańskie looks especially impressive in autumn – dark water, forests beginning to change colour and huge clouds moving across the valley created a very atmospheric scene. One of the photos also shows the Presidential Castle in Wisła, standing high on the hillside above the reservoir. From the dam it is one of the most recognizable landmarks in the surrounding landscape.
Z jednej strony mamy więc techniczną modernizację ważnego obiektu hydrotechnicznego, a z drugiej Jezioro Czerniańskie i jesienne Beskidy, które nawet w środku remontu potrafią zrobić robotę.
🇬🇧 The dam is changing, but its role remains the same
For the next few months this place will look a little different than usual – barriers, construction zones, fresh concrete and sections of the spillway under renovation have temporarily become part of the landscape. For me, that makes it an even more interesting moment to document the dam, because in a few months I will be able to return to exactly the same viewpoints and compare the results. On one side there is the modernization of an important hydraulic structure; on the other, Lake Czerniańskie and the autumn Beskids still provide a spectacular backdrop.
