🇵🇱 Powrót w teren – spokojny bieg po Gaikach 🏃‍♂️🔥⛰️ / 🇬🇧 Back on the Trails – Easy Running Around Gaiki 🏃‍♂️🔥⛰️: October 21 2026

🇵🇱 Powrót do dłuższego biegania

🇬🇧 Back to longer running

After the last few weeks of illness, problems with my left Achilles and right calf, I finally reached the point where I could go a little further than another short treadmill test. My calf had physiotherapy the day before and was still slightly tender in the morning, so the plan was simple: no quality session, no target pace — just an easy run in the hills while paying attention to how the body responded. I chose the Straconka and Gaiki area: autumn forest, rolling terrain, plenty of climbs and descents, plus a few stops for photos and videos along the way. The weather was simply too good to spend another session on a treadmill.

🇬🇧 Eight kilometres over rolling terrain

The final result was 8.19 km in 55 minutes, with an average pace of 6:43/km and 211 metres of elevation gain. Pace alone does not tell much of the story here because the terrain was constantly changing. On easier sections the running felt relaxed, while on steeper climbs I deliberately slowed down whenever the effort started getting too high. There was no need to “hold the pace” — if the terrain called for slower jogging, I simply slowed down.

Average heart rate was 150 bpm, with a maximum of 176 bpm, so physiologically this was much harder than a classic easy run on flat ground. Garmin even classified the main benefit as intensive aerobic / threshold, but this was not a threshold workout in the sense of my training plan. The high heart rate came mainly from the climbs, not from deliberately holding a hard pace.

🇬🇧 The diesel engine switched on again

On the steeper climbs, that familiar “diesel engine” feeling returned. The pace was slow, heart rate occasionally reached around 170–172 bpm, breathing became heavy, but the effort stayed smooth and stable. It felt completely different from a hard threshold session on flat ground, where the intensity is deliberately held high until it gradually starts to bite. Here it was simply slow jogging uphill, heavy but controlled, with no fight against the pace and the option to back off whenever necessary. The best description would be: hard, but steady.

The most important part, however, was something else. My left Achilles stayed around 1/10, while the right calf stayed around 2/10. I could feel both areas, but neither got progressively worse. After the last few weeks, that was exactly the reaction I wanted — not completely symptom-free yet, but stable throughout almost an hour of running on uneven terrain.

Najbardziej cieszy balans lewej i prawej strony: 50,6 / 49,4.

🇬🇧 A good step forward, but not full training yet

The data also reflects the nature of this run. An average cadence of 156 spm, stride length of 0.96 m and ground contact time of 308 ms are clearly different from my previous easy runs on simpler terrain, but with climbs, uneven ground and a cautious return to running, that makes perfect sense. What I am most pleased with is the left/right balance: 50.6 / 49.4. Despite the history of Achilles problems on one side and calf problems on the other, there is no obvious sign of shifting the load away from either leg.

Energetically, this was not a typical easy run either — Stamina dropped from 100 to 48%, so the hills definitely had their cost. At the same time, there was still plenty left in reserve and I did not finish the run completely drained. The main conclusion is simple: my body handled 55 minutes of trail running much better than I could have expected not long ago. It does not mean I am back to full training yet, but as the next step after the short treadmill tests, it is a very encouraging sign.
