English version
Caigüire Square welcomes me with open arms. I’ve passed through this place many times, but now I notice that it looks restored, especially because of the new murals—though some still appear unfinished.
This public space pays tribute to singer-songwriter Ali Primera; here we can see a painting in his honor alongside musical instruments characteristic of Venezuelan music, such as the cuatro and maracas. There’s also a Cross of May and a couple dancing in the midst of the celebration. Another mural features a bluebird and several flowers; it’s quite eye-catching thanks to its cheerful combination of colors.
It’s a cozy spot with built-in benches lining the giant planters; large trees stand here, providing shade and beautifying the area. You can also see and hear the ocean waves; because of this, people sit here to rest for a while—especially those waiting their turn to fill up at a gas station located very close by.
On one of the walls of this plaza, there is a very eye-catching logo engraved with the following phrase: “100% Caiguireño: History, Pride, and Tradition.” The design features a boat, the sea, the horizon with its distinctive mountain, and the imposing Cumaná sun—characteristic elements that define the fishermen of this community.
Back in my youth, when I was studying at the “La Inmaculada” School—which is just one block away—I used to walk by here every day. A lot has changed since then; right on the corner there used to be a stationery store where I was a regular customer, buying last-minute school supplies. I also remember that the trees weren’t as tall; they’ve grown considerably since then—and I’m sure they’d say the same about me.
