WTF: Arc Your Back

We Talk Friday

(WTF)

This is a semi-regular series that I will run on Fridays to hold discussions on a current topic from the week gone. The aim is to keep them light and conversational, though some might be heavier - regardless of the content topic itself though, just have some fun engaging and discussing with whoever happens to put in the effort in the comments section below.

We Talk Friday Ep. 78: Arch Your Back

Normally I finish Friday with a WTF, but today I thought I would start with it for something different and see what arrives in the evening.

1. Edifice Defecation

So, Trump wants to build a version of the Arc de Triomphe in Washington and his selling point for the estimated 100M+ building is that it can store drones and ammunition for snipers. Oh, and a gold "Lady Liberty" figure on top. For all the people who seem to support this man, just imagine him at your local pub telling stories - all about himself, all severely embellished, and all incoherent.

Would you build a statue of that guy in the centre of your town?

2. Suggested Jailbait

A report in Finland came out from YLE (state news) uncovering that WhatsApp is suggesting to adult men to follow the channel accounts of children (predominantly girls). The children, many under the age of 13, post videos of themselves dancing, selfies and even share location information with their followers. Seems digital natives are also digital nimwits. You'd think that with all the data the platforms have available, this wouldn't happen - unless it is intentional.

3. Luce in the Sky

The much panned (by everyone who can't afford one) Ferrari Luce, has defied the haters and apparently has sold its entire quota for 2027. While the numbers haven't been released, it is estimated that it is 1000-1100 cars and they expect that once people are able to test-drive it, the orders will go up. That is saying something for a car that is going to cost around 550,000€ stock. At the end of the day though, it is just another electric car when what should be getting all the development investment is in the energy industry required to power them.

That WhatsApp algorithm issue is deeply disturbing. It's crazy how tech platforms keep failing at basic safety for minors. Also, your point about the Ferrari Luce is spot on. It's just another expensive toy when we should be focusing on the energy infrastructure required to power them. Well written

WhatsApp is a crap app that I mostly get some spam on, but we have our neighborhood group on it, so I kind of have to have it. If I was suggested some I probably didn't even realize it as I am always blocking everyone unless I know them.

In any case, I believe that protecting minors is the primary concern here—ensuring they are aware of the dangers, such as the risks of sharing their personal information or home address online. Regardless, I do not think a 13-year-old should have a channel on WhatsApp or other similar platforms. What will these tech giants do in response to this situation?

  • @alvanozie(66)· 3h

Personally, I wouldn't want a statue of any politician in the centre of my town. I'd rather have a well-equipped hospital, a good library, or something that people can actually benefit from.

We often talk about teaching children to be careful online, but I think we should also be asking what responsibilities these platforms have. Safety shouldn't depend entirely on how careful a child is.

  • @sammylain2(61)· 4h

I wonder how many parents actually know the kind of accounts and channels their children are exposed to through recommendations. Sometimes, the content that appears on someone's feed is just as important as the content they deliberately search for.

He can do whatever to destroy every respect for him...but I am wondering......is there a chance of Impeachment for Trump after the bypoll election result ?

The WhatsApp part is honestly a massive scandal. These tech giants track every click we make, so pushing kids' accounts to grown men is a total disgrace.

I can't imagine paying so much for a car regarless how rich/ poor I would be.

I'm actually kind of surprised he wants to build something like France has. He's never really been a fan of that country I don't think. Come up with something original... The algorithm is broken or skewed for sure. It needs to be tossed out. I've gotta believe this whole thing is just a fad that will even out. The influencer, doing things for likes thing, not the pedo thing.
