🇺🇸 ~ I WAS GIVEN A SINGER 875! I can hardly believe it—I haven’t stopped expressing my gratitude for this surprise, and I’ve been completely obsessed with figuring out how this model works. For me, Christmas came early, and I want to take this gesture (along with many little miracles here and there that have happened over the last 10 days) as a sign that I’m on the right path.

The user manual wasn’t hard to find, and before I start experimenting with it to “get the hang of it,” as they say (because every sewing machine has its own personality), I want to take my time to read it carefully and make the necessary notes because, wow, this machine is quite different from the models I’ve used before or have at home.

Also, this is the first time I’ve seen a sewing machine that uses discs—discs to set the stitch types!—and holding them in my hands, they feel like something special, like when you had the fancy accessories that came with an expensive toy back in the ’90s. They even gave me an original Singer box to store them in 🥹 💞

I know this isn't a toy, but I'm making the comparison because of how this gift made me feel—it made me feel like a little girl again.

Here’s the story:

For many years now, there have been two other people in my community who love sewing—two elderly ladies and me. Less than a week ago, while I was watering the garden, the daughter of one of these ladies saw me as she was walking her dog and said, “I’ve been meaning to talk to you about something!”

She explained that they had a sewing machine at home that was running a bit slowly, and they didn’t want to send it in for repairs anymore. The lady who owned the machine wanted to know if it would be useful to me or if I’d get any use out of it, and if I wanted it, she’d give it to me.

I said yes without hesitation, and my neighbor told me she’d come back later with the sewing machine.

I had imagined a simpler model—perhaps an inexpensive one that was popular between the 2000s and 2010s—but I never in a million years imagined this treasure. This is a sewing machine with a very sturdy internal structure, from a time when things were made to last a lifetime.

I currently have a Singer 4432 at home, and although it’s a powerful machine, I don’t like to push it to its limits, because if I end up damaging it, that means a trip to a specialist technician—who isn’t exactly close to where I live now—so I really needed a “Plan B.”

And here’s my **“Plan B”—**I don’t mean that I’m going to burn out a machine just because I have another one now; what I mean is that if I ever need to sew at full speed or with very thick materials, I have an alternative that’s better suited to that situation and project.

From what I’ve read, the Singer 875 can operate stably at high speeds (750 stitches per minute) because one of its key features is its durability—thanks to its metal internal construction— whereas the Singer 4432 has internal plastic parts—even though they’re made of high-durability nylon—I’m worried that if I push it too hard, it might lose its timing or damage a gear or sprocket.

ENGLISH VERSION

I don’t have any photos of the moment I received it, because I was so excited that I went straight off to find everything I needed to clean it. It was clear it had been in storage for some time and the pedal was particularly dirty, with bits of sticky tape and the dust you’d expect on a part operated by your feet (this doesn’t bother me because I love cleaning, restoring and refurbishing second-hand items).

I used cotton wool, disinfectant and alcohol, and it took me about an hour and a half to clean everything before plugging it in and switching it on; sure enough, something’s wrong – from the symptoms, I gather it needs its carbon brushes replaced or the motor is jammed; in either case, it’s a cheap fix. I’m so happy! 🎉 ₍ᐢ..ᐢ₎♡₍ᐢ..ᐢ₎。🎉

Whilst I’m getting ready to take it to the specialist technician, I’m also thinking of taking a Singer 550 CG in for servicing, as it might have the same problem.

This is such a lovely treat that has helped me cope with the sadness caused by the power cuts, which are getting much worse in the country and especially in my city.

I’ll keep you updated on how this new friend is getting on and, in the meantime, I’d love some suggestions for names, as I haven’t decided on one yet 🎂 🎀

❤️Saludos @tesmoforia
