Continuing my visit along the coastal promenade, I make a stop at the "Monk and the Indian" monument. This monument represents the evangelization of the indigenous people by Franciscan missionaries from Spain during the country's colonization and the establishment of the first cities on the American continent following the arrival of the Spanish in 1492.
The monument depicts a monk and an indigenous person—one of those evangelized by the priests who traveled to the eastern region of Venezuela. There, they established the first settlement in Latin America, known as San Francisco. Structures were built near the banks of the Manzanares River, allowing the priests to teach the Christian faith while the indigenous people carried out their daily activities. The San Francisco district, located in Cumaná, witnessed the city's growth and expansion throughout history, eventually becoming an important landmark. Furthermore, Cumaná is considered the "firstborn" of the American continent, as it was the first city founded on the mainland by European conquerors.
As I mentioned, the monument is located along the cinta costera—an area once considered the gateway to the city—and was built to commemorate the meeting of two cultures. Over time, these cultures exchanged elements, eventually blending to form the society that exists today. From this fusion emerged traditions, cuisines, and dances that endure to this day. Thank you for joining me on this adventure to the city’s cinta costera, with its beautiful scenery and the monument that pays tribute to the indigenous peoples who once inhabited the eastern region of the country. They sustained themselves through hunting, fishing, and gathering along riverbanks—a setting that supported their daily activities, provided their food, and yielded goods they could trade with neighboring tribes.
