CCC's Street Art Contest #322: The Mural of the Street of Witches

Have a lovely week, Street Art community! In other posts, I had mentioned that in the city of La Paz, there is an entire neighborhood that tourists visit and where there are several shops selling souvenirs.

On this occasion, while I was strolling around those areas, I came across this new mural. The truth is, its size and the technique they used really caught my attention.

In this mural, we can see a cholita (indigenous and mestizo woman from Bolivia, mainly from the Aymara and Quechua cultures) weaving something resembling a shawl or a sweater.

This lady is wearing a sweater and an apron. Additionally, she is covered by an aguayo blanket (a traditional rectangular fabric from the Andean region) and, finally, she wears a small hat to protect herself from the sun.

At the level of her feet, several painted pots can be seen that match very well with the real pots found at the foot of the mural.

Now, if we go to the right side, we can see several typical elements of the city. At the top, we can see an object used for spinning wool; we can also see three llama fetuses.

These fetuses are used in the preparation of altars, which are then burned as traditional offerings of the Andean worldview dedicated to Pachamama, in gratitude for all that she gives us. That is why these elements are usually included on the altars, as they symbolize reciprocity.

Further down, we see the face of a puma or another feline, which represents a fierce guardian that drives away bad energies from the home or business. You can also see ceramic figures representing different types of felines.

Lastly, we can see coca leaves falling from the sky. Coca is a traditional plant from my country and is used in this type of ceremonies.

In summary, this mural represents the women who sell all these elements to prepare the offering tables. These are usually held in August, considered by many people as the month of Pachamama, when it is said that the earth is hungry and offerings are made with greater intensity.

I hope you liked this mural and that you learned a little more about Bolivian culture.

Have a great day and see you in the next post!
