I had my coffee and a little breakfast, then blindly walked into one of the best movies Iβve seen this year.
Eddington is a modern Western set in the year 2020. It takes place in a small town on New Mexico named Eddington.
After two and a half hours of watching Eddington, myself and 6 other people in the theater didnβt know what we had watched, but we knew that it freaking amazing movie somehow.
The movie is a lot of things. Itβs a modern Western that kind of feels like one of the best movies ever, No Country For Old Men, but a little less dark and kinda funny. Itβs a 2020 time piece that captures everything that went on at that time, from Covid, to the George Floyd murder and BLM movement, to big tech, and the rise of crazy internet cults. The movie is also a thriller with some insane twists and turns.
The movie gives you all of these things and a lot of entertainment value but I donβt think itβs for everyone. This is not a movie for overly sensitive people! No one is safe during the movie. It holds a mirror to the vibes of the time of the far right, the far left, whether you were for wearing masks or against masksβ¦ It touches on the social justice movements, racial tensions, and conspiracy theories of 2020. And it addresses all of these things in an honest way that is going to step on EVERYONEβs. So yeah, if youβre a wuss, sit out on one of the best movies of the year. π€·πΎββοΈ
The main plot of the story follows Joe Cross, played by Joaquin Phoenix, as he battles the current mayor, Ted Garcia, played by Pedro Pascal, for mayor of Eddington. The characters have their different ideas on policy, and the race for mayor gets personal and super messy. This is a good enough story in itself for a movie, but then the movie takes you for a few crazy twists and turns with the subplots that make the movie insanely good.
All of the characters are just trying to do the best they can while navigating the confusing times that the year 2020 was. Everyone is at the mercy of the information they receive on their personal phones and laptops, which leads the characters to make some interesting decisions.
All of these stories within the movie add up to make one crazy and super interesting two and a half hours of entertainment. I was shocked that a movie I saw zero advertisement for could be so good. I left the theater with a feeling of βwhat did I just watch?β and feeling that Iβd enjoy a second viewing of the film. Eddington is on par with Sinners and should definitely go down as one of the best movies of 2025! I highly recommend checking the movie out in theaters, and I give Eddington a rating of:
9.3/10
