Hello to everyone in the Movies & TV Shows community! Today I bring you a movie review and this time I'll be talking about the Spanish thriller, Mientras Duermes. Directed by Jaume Balaguero and with a screenplay by Alberto Marini (inspired by the novel of the same name), Mientras Duermes is a pretty good proposal for those who enjoy suspense, drama and to some extent, horror movies. For what we will see on screen for almost two hours is a story worthy of a nightmare. So join me in this article.
Released in 2011 and starring Luis Tosar (as César) and Marta Etura (Clara), they tell us the story of César, a doorman of a prestigious apartment residence in Barcelona and his life inside it. Under a facade of kindness and helpfulness, César hides a disturbed personality because he is unhappy and his only pleasure is to make others suffer. Possessing the power to access all the apartments on the property, he sneaks into them to make life hell for the residents. But there is someone in particular whom Cesar detests, Clara, a cheerful and hardworking young woman who seems to be unmoved by any pain, will be the perfect target to fulfill one of his most perverse fantasies.

From the first moment we see César on screen, we sense that something is not right, but we don't know what. Because he acts unpredictably and that factor of not knowing what kind of thing he will do next time, leaves us anxious, in suspense. The Machiavellian way in which he draws his plan of action for Clara and how he cynically sustains that role of good and innocent man, lets us know that he has no guilt or remorse and will use all possible tools to reach his end. He is undoubtedly one of the best psychopaths ever seen in cinema because Luis Tosar's performance is so good, that it is repulsive.
In addition, this film has a similar charm to the film proposals of Roman Polanski, who uses in Rosemary's Baby, The Tenant and Repulsion resources such as urban life scenarios (residences, complexes, apartments) and characters as neighbors a little impertinent. And something else that he takes from Polanski (and even Hitchcok, as in The Rear Window) is the fact that terror, true terror is not based on science fiction monsters, screams, apparitions, blood and other histrionic resources for Jaime Balaguero, there is nothing more terrifying than man's capacity to do harm.

Finally my friends, I recommend this film 100%. It is a jewel of Spanish cinema and if you want to see more of Luis Tosar (which will leave you wanting to see more of him and his director) I suggest Te Doy mis Ojos (2003). For me you can't miss it, so if you are still not convinced try to imagine what; tonight you will go to sleep, how everything is always quiet and in its place but what you don't know is that there is someone stalking you and waiting for you to fall asleep to hurt you. Without more to say, thank you very much for reading. I send you a big hug, take care and let's watch movies!
