Hello to everyone in the Movies & TV Shows community! Today I bring a movie recommendation. For which I also think it is also viable to make a warning because of the strong emotional charge it has and the themes that are dealt with in it. Thus I present what is one of director Gregg Araki's most outstanding films. Let's begin.
Mysterious Skin is a film of the drama genre, premiered in 2004 at the Venice Film Festival. The plot of the film is based on the story of Neil McCormick and Brian Lackey, two boys who cross paths as they belong to the same children's baseball league and experience a particularly abnormal situation together in the summer of 1981. During a baseball game Brian suffers a blackout and when he comes to his senses he is back home and believes he has been abducted by aliens. Meanwhile Neil becomes a direct target of his coach, who slowly turns from a loving father figure to a pedophile. The years will pass and we will witness how each one faces his reality in his own way.

De esta forma presento lo que es una de las películas más destacadas del director Gregg Araki. Comencemos.
Mysterious Skin es una película del género de drama, estrenada en el año 2004 en el Festival de Cine de Venecia. El argumento de la película se basa en la historia de Neil McCormick y de Brian Lackey, dos chicos que cruzan sus caminos al pertenecer a la misma liga de béisbol infantil y al vivir juntos en el verano de 1981 una situación particularmente anormal. Durante un juego de béisbol Brian sufre un desvanecimiento y cuando recupera el sentido está de vuelta en casa, por lo cual cree que ha sido abducido por alienígenas. Mientras tanto Neil se convierte en blanco directo de su entrenador, quién poco a poco pasa de ser una figura paterna amorosa a un pederasta. Los años pasarán y seremos testigos de como cada uno afronta su realidad a su propia forma.
This film is especially different with respect to the treatment of issues such as child abuse. The scenes are explicit without getting to the morbid (as much as possible because no one mentally healthy would feel comfortable with these scenes) but it certainly follows a fairly intense pace that can be difficult to bear. A very good narrative. The realistic depiction of the profile of people who have been sexually abused is something that stands out because unlike other directors, Gregg Araki manages to suggest that such a situation has occurred and prefers to focus on what life is like after the abuse. He does it in a sober and unhurried way, because we need to know the protagonists, the victims, well.
On the one hand we have Neil who is openly homosexual and promiscuous (he prostitutes himself) and on the other hand we have Brian who feels abandoned by his father and is quite shy (he only devotes his time to matters related to alien abduction). Both seem to live in a dream, as if they live mechanically and act by pure inertia in the face of more circumstances. Brian's inability to remember what happened when he was a child (cognitive dissonance) and Neil's promiscuity (boycott) are a clear example of trauma in a victim. A contrast of behaviors, each self-destructing in their own way.
Esta película es especialmente diferente con respecto al tratamiento de temas como el abuso infantil. Las escenas son explícitas sin llegar a lo morboso (lo más que se puede pues nadie mentalmente sano se sentiría cómodo ante estás escenas) pero sigue sin duda un ritmo bastante intenso que puede ser difícil de llevar. Una narrativa muy buena. El describir de forma tan realista el perfil de las personas que han sido abusadas sexualmente es algo que destaca pues a diferencia de otros directores, Gregg Araki se las arregla para sugerir que dicha situación se ha dado y prefiere enfocarse en cómo es la vida después del abuso. Lo hace de forma sobria y sin apuros, pues necesitamos conocer bien a los protagonista, a las víctimas.
Por un lado tenemos a Neil quién es abiertamente homosexual y promiscuo (él se prostituye) y por otro lado tenemos a Brian quién se siente abandonado por su padre y es bastante tímido (solo dedica su tiempo a asuntos relacionados a la abducción alienígena). Ambos parecen vivir en un sueño, como si vivieran de forma mecánica y actuaran por pura inercia ante más circunstancias. La incapacidad de Brian por recordar lo que sucedió cuando era pequeño (disonancia cognitiva) y la promiscuidad (boicot) de Neil, son un claro ejemplo de los traumas en una víctima. Un contraste de conductas, cada uno autodestruyéndose a su forma.
It is also impressive to see the performances of Joseph Gordon-Levitt (as Neil) and Brady Corbet (as Brian). You can really feel Neil's fury behind that defiant, carefree attitude. And also a Brian who is afraid of almost anything and unable to set boundaries in his relationships.
I must say that although this kind of movies send an important message, by making visible the consequences of sexual abuse in minors (and in general, in any victim), they have to be taken with a lot of caution. So it's up to you, and as I always say, judge for yourselves. If you like directors like Takashi Miike, Gaspar Noe, Larry Clark or Harmony Korine, this is a good opportunity to take a look at Mysterious Skin. Es impresionante también ver las actuaciones de Joseph Gordon-Levitt (como Neil) y Brady Corbet (como Brian). Realmente puedes sentir la furia de Neil detrás de esa actitud desafiante y despreocupada. Y también un Brian que siente miedo de casi cualquier cosa e incapaz de poner límites en sus relaciones.
Debo decir que aunque esté tipo de películas mandan un mensaje importante, al hacer visibles las consecuencias del abuso sexual en menores (y en general, en cualquier víctima), hay que tomarlas con mucha prudencia. Por ello todo depende de ustedes y como siempre digo, juzguen por su cuenta. Si gustan de directores como Takashi Miike, Gaspar Noe, Larry Clark o Harmony Korine, está es una buena oportunidad para echarle un vistazo a Mysterious Skin.
