Legado en los huesos y Ofrenda a la tormenta//Legacy in the bones and Offering to the storm[ESP-ENG]

Review by @damarysvibra · 1889d · of The Legacy of the Bones

Legado. Portada.jpg

We move in a world of beliefs that are built in different social groups, beliefs that we assume as truths from which we interpret and understand our realities.

Some are based on ideologies or religion, others are based on a world full of myths and legends, some have been extended in space and time, in any case, they all seek to explain, give reasons and, in most cases, contain a promise of a better future than the present.

This world of beliefs is part of what the writer-screenwriter Dolores Redondo presents in her work the Baztan Trilogy and that the director Fernando González Molina brings to the screen. In another article I made an intentional commentary on the first film of the saga: The Invisible Guardian (2019) and today I bring together the last two: Legacy in the bones and Offering to the storm (2020), in a single installment because their contents find explanation and outcome in both.

Los personajes

Legadi 1.jpg

The characters

Starring (Marta Etura) as Amaia Salazar, Inspector. The cast includes: (Leonardo Sbaraglia) in the role of Judge Javier Markina; (Susi Sánchez): Rosario, Amaia's mother; Jonan Etxaide (Carlos Librado) Sub-Inspector, Amaia's partner; Father Sarasola (Imanol Arias).

The plot

Amaia, after a year of having closed a case, in her hometown, finds herself in the city court during the trial of a man who committed a crime imitating the serial killer who had already been caught. Minutes before the trial begins, the man commits suicide and leaves a note for the investigator, Amaia, who is pregnant, is affected by the event, accelerating the delivery of her baby.

Four months later she returns to work, starting a new line of investigation related to the note left by the suicide, which contained only one word: "Tarttalo".

As the investigation progresses, they find common points with events of the past that intertwine with the present, repeatedly appearing the same message: "Tarttalo", which in Basque mythology is a cyclops, an anthropophagus whose legend involves baby girls. The plot weaves through a world of witchcraft, mythology, religion and the researcher's own world.

As I pointed out at the beginning, our thoughts and experiences are sustained by beliefs and many times the problems that derive from them are not in themselves due to the belief but to the interpretation we give it, that is to say, of those people who lead them.

Throughout the history of mankind we have seen these characters who have the power to convince others to follow their ideas and actions, without the reflection and questioning of the followers.

In the Baztan trilogy a belief that time had forgotten is rescued and the amazing thing is that it gets followers, people capable of breaking the limits of what is human, of what is morally conventional, that goes beyond the barrier of what it is to live in society. In this sense the message comes into play and who receives it, not all of us receive and interpret the idea in the same way. The trilogy then becomes a psychological thriller, where a group of people are able to follow another in their madness.

Can situations like these occur off-screen, is it possible that a belief, an ideology leads to breaking the limits? History shows us, for example, Hitler who in a short time proposed an idea of extermination and was followed by millions of people in search of an ethnic purity that, even today, there are groups married to this idea. Or how many times have we not heard of religious sects whose members abandon their families and their way of life following a leader with obsessive ideas that disrupt realities.

In the trilogy the belief is not political or religious, it is about power and ambition, two human characteristics for which many have committed the greatest barbarities and that like any collective obsession, both the leader and his followers need something more than a touch of madness.
