For many, the original Ready or Not became a cult classic with its blend of horror, survival, and dark comedy. It serves as a sharp critique of the excesses of ultra-wealthy families who are willing to do literally anything. Who would have thought this movie would get a sequel? It was recently added to Hulu, and I just couldn't miss it.
The new film, Ready or Not Here I Come, picks up the story immediately where the first one left off. We see Grace (Samara Weaving) sitting on the mansion's grand staircase at dawn, right after every member of the family who tried to kill her violently exploded. Now, she's brought before the council of other families bound by the same pact, forced to survive until dawn once more—because if anyone manages to kill her, they'll inherit the seat presiding over this powerful cabal.
While the premise sounds identical to the first movie, there are a few key differences. First, if she survives, she actually gets to take the seat presiding over the council, thanks to marrying into and surviving the original family that tried to hunt her down. The second major difference is that she's now joined by her estranged sister, Faith (Kathryn Newton)—whom she hasn't seen in seven years—adding a whole new layer of emotional complexity to her survival and a great dynamic for viewers.
The movie is packed with the kind of dark humor and gore I haven't enjoyed in a while—I know it sounds weird since this kind of content isn't for everyone and few find it entertaining. But I was genuinely surprised by how hooked I stayed from start to finish. Even though I caught plenty of parallels to the first film, those minor tweaks gave this story its own distinct flavor. Watching a fractured sisterly bond heal in the middle of a life-or-death survival game is downright surreal.
I recommend watching with discretion; it’s heavy on gore and mature themes, definitely not a family movie. It’s strictly for people who appreciate dark humor and aren't expecting a deep, complex plot to unpack.
