Today I felt like watching something fun and a little different. I’d been noticing that Shelter, Jason Statham's latest movie, was available, so I figured I’d give it a shot. Honestly, with him, you already know what you’re getting into because he keeps making the exact same movie over and over. The Beekeeper, A Working Man, The Mechanic, or The Transporter—they all feel similar, but they always deliver. After watching this latest one, despite a few flaws, it’s not a bad way to kill an afternoon.
Shelter is basically an action thriller where Statham plays Mason, a super-soldier hiding out from his past on a Scottish island. Jesse (Bodhi Rae Breathnach), a teenage girl, brings him weekly supplies alongside her uncle. After an incident, he’s forced off the island, exposing himself to the people hunting him. He gets tracked down, triggering a cat-and-mouse game where he has to protect the girl while making his escape.
You’ll notice the premise sounds identical to every other Statham movie, but those of us familiar with his pattern keep tuning in anyway. We watch them because they make for great weekend entertainment. The action, chases, hand-to-hand combat, and gunfights are all the same, paired with sparse dialogue and a shallow plot. Even if that sounds like a critique, I was thoroughly entertained. I wasn't looking for a deep story or an existential drama—just straight-up action, plain and simple.
Young Bodhi Rae Breathnach actually did pretty well; she brought the emotional weight the movie needed, especially in the first half. That intro moves surprisingly slow and catches you off guard, since a setup in a Statham movie usually doesn't take this long. It throws off the pacing a bit, making the ending feel rushed and crammed together. Still, despite all that, the action is solid and fun. It's the perfect movie to put on while grabbing a bite in front of the TV.
