I just finished this miniseries, and man, what a fascinating premise. What looks like a comedy actually masks a theme that’s been controversial both today and in the past. What started as a reckless adventure born from a lack of maturity ends up implicitly tackling the question: Is a single mother justified in doing whatever it takes to provide for her kids?
Tabú vs supervivencia - Desglosando Margo’s Got Money Troubles
Margo's Got Money Troubles follows Margo, a young literature student who gets seduced by one of her professors. After a few encounters, she gets pregnant. The professor asks her to get an abortion, but she decides to go through with the pregnancy. She soon discovers that motherhood is brutal and that bills don’t pay themselves. So, she decides the way out of her financial mess is joining OnlyFans—rationalizing it by telling herself that, hey, she’s a writer, and this is just an opportunity to make "art."
This layer of the story almost feels secondary at first—in fact, it's held together by isolated scenes where very little is physically shown, almost theatricalizing what the protagonist does. We quickly transition from doing OnlyFans just to financially support her baby to chasing engagement, more followers, and higher earnings. All of this plays out against the backdrop of her chaotic family dynamics: her mother, Shyanne, who is about to marry a Christian man, and her father, Jinx, a recovering heroin addict and former pro wrestler.
Things inevitably blow up when the baby’s father decides to sue Margo, claiming she’s unfit to raise the child. Naturally, he uses the moral angle, arguing that what she does compromises the kid's future. This sparks a legal battle that's only really addressed in the final two episodes, where the judge notes that, for now, the child is surrounded by people who love him. Completely dodging the morality debate, the judge rules in Margo's favor.
Stories like this are bound to split opinions. What previous generations deemed taboo is now seen as completely normal by younger crowds—and if you think otherwise, you're just old-fashioned. All of this made me think about how men react to these situations online: most of them happily consume the content, but when asked if they’d date someone who makes it, they consider it an absolute dealbreaker out of fear of social stigma, fidelity concerns, and intimacy issues.
Putting that particular thematic layer aside, everything else about the series is genuinely great, anchored by top-tier performances from the main cast. Elle Fanning is totally dialed in as Margo, perfectly nailing her character arc. Michelle Pfeiffer plays Shyanne, Margo’s mom, as a fascinating mix of self-absorption and hard-earned moral maturity. And Nick Offerman as Jinx—the absent father trying to make amends—makes you instantly empathize with him through his raw expressions of love and support, despite his past bad choices.
To wrap it up, Margo’s Got Money Troubles refuses to easily judge its protagonist or the audience. In fact, it forces you to ask yourself: are you condemning Margo’s choices because of how they actually impact her child, or simply because they make our conventional idea of respectability feel a little uncomfortable? If you've already streamed it, drop a comment and let me know what you thought and where you stand on this.
