Este sábado finalizó la primera temporada de un anime que me atrapó desde el primer capítulo, y deseaba compartir mi opinión con ustedes, porque si hay algo que me agrada hacer es hablar de las cosas que me gustan 🤭 La adaptación del manga Jigokuraku, de Yūji Kaku, estuvo encargada del estudio MAPPA, quiénes nos han brindado grandes animes, algunos recientes como Chainsaw Man y Jujutsu Kaisen (¡estoy sumamente impaciente por la nueva temporada de Jujutsu!), por lo tanto, estaba intrigada con esta historia y decidí darle una oportunidad —además, también quiero estar al día con los animes de cada temporada—.

Este anime está lleno de diferentes horrores… ¡Y me encanta! 🥰✨ Hace mención a los shinobi y el ninjutsu, y como fiel amante de Naruto me enamoré con eso, así que cada semana esperaba por el nuevo capítulo. Por eso, con el menor uso de spoilers, te daré mi opinión sobre el abismo de Hell’s Paradise 🔥

This Saturday ended the first season of an anime that caught me from the first chapter, and I wanted to share my opinion with you, because if there's something I like to do is to talk about the things I like 🤭 The adaptation of the manga Jigokuraku, by Yūji Kaku, was in charge of MAPPA studio, who have given us great anime, some recent ones like Chainsaw Man and Jujutsu Kaisen (I'm extremely impatient for the new season of Jujutsu! ), so I was intrigued with this story and decided to give it a chance - plus, I also want to keep up with the anime of each season.

The anime it's full of different horrors... And I love it! 🥰✨ It makes mention of shinobi and ninjutsu, and as a loyal Naruto lover I fell in love with that, so every week I was waiting for the new chapter. So, with the least use of spoilers, I'll give you my opinion about the abyss of Hell's Paradise 🔥

Para comenzar, es importante mencionar que este anime se encuentra ambientado en la historia antigua de Japón, específicamente durante la época del Periodo Edo (investiguen sobre la historia japonesa, es muy interesante), por lo cual, el país se encontraba gobernado por el ‘shogunato’. Ahora mezclemos este dato histórico con bastante fantasía, horror y acción, y tendremos a Hell’s Paradise 😌

Hell’s Paradise nos cuenta la historia de Gabimaru “El Vacío”, un ninja con diferentes habilidades y gran poder, que —debido a sus crímenes— es condenado a muerte. Y aquí comienza el primer problema, pues, Gabimaru es imposible de asesinar. No es que sea inmortal, simplemente ningún arma o técnica utilizada le hace daño, ¿su cuerpo es sumamente resistente debido a su entrenamiento shinobi, o Gabimaru simplemente no desea morir? Los oficiales se dan por vencidos en sus intentos de asesinar a este hombre, y contactan al Clan Yamada, un grupo de samuráis encargados de ejecutar a los mayores criminales.

To begin with, it's important to mention that this anime is set in ancient Japanese history, specifically during the Edo Period (do some research on Japanese history, it's very interesting), so the country was ruled by the 'shogunate'. Now mix this historical fact with plenty of fantasy, horror and action, and you have Hell's Paradise 😌

Hell's Paradise tells us the story of Gabimaru "The Hollow", a ninja with different abilities and great power, who -due to his crimes- is condemned to death. And here begins the first problem, because Gabimaru is impossible to assassinate. It is not that he is immortal, simply no weapon or technique used hurts him, is his body extremely resistant due to his shinobi training, or Gabimaru simply does not want to die? The officers give up in their attempts to assassinate this man, and contact the Yamada Clan, a group of samurai in charge of executing the biggest criminals.

De esta manera, llega la ‘asaemon’ conocida como Sagiri para enfrentarse al resistente Gabimaru. Durante el enfrentamiento, Sagiri descubre el porqué nadie puede asesinar a este ninja. ¿Tienes curiosidad? Entonces ve el anime o lee el manga 🤭 Gracias a las notables habilidades y voluntad de Gabimaru le ofrecen un trato: el shogunato le perdonará sus crímenes y será libre, si consigue el “Elixir de la Vida”. Cuenta la leyenda que este elixir le otorgará la inmortalidad y otros dones a quien lo beba, convirtiéndolo en un tesoro que todos desean.

Sin embargo, este “elixir” solo se encuentra en una isla, un “paraíso divino”, hogar de los dioses… pues, de “paraíso” no tiene ni un poco. Nadie ha logrado regresar con vida de este lugar, realmente solo algunas partes de su cuerpo vuelven 😬 Aunque ese no es el mayor obstáculo; Gabimaru estará custodiado en la isla por Sagiri, pero también los acompañarán otros criminales condenados a muerte (junto a sus Asaemon), quienes tienen el mismo trato. En una pelea contra el tiempo y los horrores de la isla, todos tienen la misión de hallar el Elixir, y solo uno podrá ser perdonado. La cuestión no es cómo sobrevivir, la verdadera pregunta que hay que plantearse es: ¿realmente existe el “Elixir de la Vida”?

Thus, the 'asaemon' known as Sagiri arrives to confront the resistant Gabimaru. During the confrontation, Sagiri discovers why no one can assassinate this ninja. Curious? Then watch the anime or read the manga 🤭 Thanks to Gabimaru's remarkable skills and willpower, he is offered a deal: the shogunate will forgive him his crimes and he will be free, if he gets the "Elixir of Life". Legend has it that this elixir will grant immortality and other gifts to whoever drinks it, making it a treasure that everyone desires.

However, this "elixir" is only found on an island, a "divine paradise", home of the gods... well, "paradise" is not even a little bit. No one has managed to return alive from this place, really only some parts of theirs bodies come back 😬 Although that's not the biggest obstacle; Gabimaru will be guarded on the island by Sagiri, but they will also be accompanied by other criminals sentenced to death (along with their Asaemon), who have the same treatment. In a fight against time and the horrors of the island, they all have the mission to find the Elixir, and only one can be pardoned. The question is not how to survive, the real question to ask is: does the "Elixir of Life" really exist?

Considero que los personajes de Hell’s Paradise son el mayor atractivo del anime, pero me voy a enfocar en los dos protagonistas. Gabimaru es, sin duda, mi personaje favorito. No es el típico protagonista bueno, altruista y con grandes metas, no, Gabimaru es un asesino, y solo buscará salvarse a sí mismo para regresar a casa (aunque su motivo para luchar por su vida es demasiado hermoso 💖)

Es un personaje muy realista, me gusta su perspectiva de los hechos, la manera en que se maneja en los momentos cruciales, es un gran ninja. A medida que avanzan los capítulos nos damos cuenta de que él dejará su apodo “El Vacío” atrás; porque la verdad es que Gabimaru sí tiene grandes sentimientos y motivaciones, simplemente no los conocía, o, mejor dicho, no se había dado un momento para conocerse a sí mismo, pero —como casi todos los animes— cuenta con un duro y oscuro pasado, un entrenamiento shinobi cruel, que aplastan su verdadero ser. Leeré el manga porque no puedo esperar a las próximas temporadas, necesito que Gabimaru encuentre la paz.

I consider the characters in Hell's Paradise to be the biggest draw of the anime, but I'm going to focus on the two main characters. Gabimaru is, without a doubt, my favorite character. He's not your typical good, altruistic protagonist with great goals, no, Gabimaru is a murderer, and will only seek to save himself to return home (although his motive for fighting for his life is too beautiful 💖)

He is a very realistic character, I like his perspective of the events, the way he handles himself in the crucial moments, he is a great ninja. As the chapters progress we realize that he will leave his nickname "The Hollow" behind; because the truth is that Gabimaru does have great feelings and motivations, he just didn't know them, or, better said, he hadn't given himself a moment to know himself, but -like almost every anime- he has a hard and dark past, a cruel shinobi training, that crush his true self. I will read the manga because I can't wait for the next seasons, I need Gabimaru to find peace.

Por otro lado, Sagiri es una mujer divina 💜 Ella busca romper con los estereotipos de su clan, se niega solo a estar enfocada en la crianza de los niños y el servicio de la casa, y busca su propio camino. Sabemos que ella es poderosa y fuerte, solo falta que ella lo sepa. Vemos como desde el principio duda de sus competencias, y eso la frena a demostrar todo el potencial que tiene. Pero igual que Gabimaru, su desarrollo se va mostrando en cada capítulo; poco a poco va tomando más seguridad en sí misma, convirtiéndose en un gran samurái 😌

On the other hand, Sagiri is a divine woman 💜 She seeks to break away from the stereotypes of her clan, refuses to just be focused on raising children and serving the household, and seeks her own path. We know she is powerful and strong, it just remains for her to know it. We see how from the beginning she doubts her competence, and that stops her from showing all the potential she has. But just like Gabimaru, her development is shown in each chapter; she gradually becomes more self-confident, becoming a great samurai 😌

Lo vuelvo a decir, aquí los personajes no brillan por su nobleza, y esa es una de las bases del anime. Los personajes principales son criminales, condenados a muerte por crímenes sangrientos; por lo tanto, se podría pensar que carecen de moral —y aunque algunos de ellos realmente no la tienen— los personajes que tienen mayor tiempo en pantalla son más profundos que su nivel de ética. Así que poco a poco te encuentras apoyando, y hasta sintiendo empatía, por estos criminales. Cada uno tiene un motivo para ser lo que son ahora, y hasta logras comprenderlo. El mangaka hizo un excelente trabajo en desarrollar esta variedad de historias ✨

Incluso, entre los Asaemon del Clan Yamada, esos samuráis que se encargan de cumplir la ley, existen algunos con dudosa moralidad. En este shōnen las cosas no son blancas o negras, no existe lo bueno y lo malo, lo que hay es un gris que a veces se torna más oscuro o más claro. Hay situaciones donde no hay una opción “correcta”, es morir o matar. Los personajes tienen motivaciones egoístas, ellos quieren su libertad y no pueden distraerse para pensar en el destino de los demás. Hay momentos en la historia en que reflexionas: “¿quién es el bueno?”. Nadie lo es. Debes aceptar a los personajes tal cual son.

I say it again, here the characters do not shine for their nobility, and that is one of the bases of the anime. The main characters are criminals, condemned to death for bloody crimes; therefore, you might think they lack morals - and while some of them really don't - the characters who get the most screen time are deeper than their level of ethics. So you gradually find yourself rooting for, and even empathizing with, these criminals. Each has a reason for being what they are now, and you even manage to understand it. The mangaka did an excellent job of developing this variety of stories ✨

Even among the Asaemon of the Yamada Clan, those samurai who are in charge of enforcing the law, there are some with dubious morals. In this shōnen things are not black and white, there is no such thing as good and bad, what there is is a gray that sometimes becomes darker or lighter. There are situations where there is no "right" choice, it's either die or kill. The characters have selfish motivations, they want their freedom and cannot be distracted to think about the fate of others. There are moments in the story where you reflect, "who is the good guy?". No one is. You must accept the characters as they are.

Si eres sensible con temas como la sangre y muertes grotescas, quizás Hell’s Paradise no sea del todo ideal para ti. La muerte está presente desde el primer capítulo hasta el último, en distintas maneras. Las escenas de lucha son fuertes, es más que solo una estocada en el corazón. Y presiento que eso continuará hasta el final de la historia.

Y aunque la muerte está muy presente, también es importante el tema de la inmortalidad. El comienzo de la historia es debido a la búsqueda de la inmortalidad, y la ironía está en que todos mueren buscándola. ¿Qué es la inmortalidad? ¿Qué pasará con la humanidad de las civilizaciones si se detiene el ciclo de la vida? Ya no serían seres humanos, se convertirían en algo más, ¿y realmente queremos “vivir” de esa manera? Me gusta como plantean la inmortalidad en el anime; como todo lo demás, no lo exponen como algo “bueno” o “malo”, te explican lo qué es, y queda en la reflexión de cada uno otorgarle un valor.

If you are sensitive to themes such as blood and grotesque deaths, Hell's Paradise may not be quite right for you. Death is present from the first chapter to the last, in different ways. The fight scenes are strong, it's more than just a lunge to the heart. And I have a feeling that will continue until the end of the story.

And although death is very present, the theme of immortality is also important. The beginning of the story is about the search for immortality, and the irony is that everyone dies searching for it. What is immortality? What will happen to the humanity of civilizations if the cycle of life is stopped? They would no longer be human beings, they would become something else, and do we really want to "live" that way? I like the way immortality is presented in the anime; like everything else, it is not presented as something "good" or "bad", they explain what it is, and it is up to the reflection of each one to give it a value.

La isla, hogar terrenal de los “Dioses”, es la gran cereza del pastel. Al principio nos presentan la isla como un paraíso divino, algo que va más allá de la simple comprensión humana, ¿pero como es que algo tan glorioso no deja que nadie salga con vida de allí? Lo que más me gustó fueron los detalles que caracterizan la isla; no es un sito divino. Es un lugar creado a base de la mezcla de diferentes religiones —como el budismo y taoísmo—; no está habitado por dioses, pero tampoco es una isla desierta, hay distintas clases de vida, seres misteriosos y desconocidos que pondrá a prueba tanto a los criminales como a los samuráis. Realmente, como dice el nombre, está más cerca de ser el infierno que el cielo.

El uso de la religión es muy interesante, especialmente la parte del taoísmo. En esta isla de fantasía se siguen las leyes de la fuerza del yin y yang, y de manera más suprema, la fuerza del “Tao”, la mayor fuente en la isla, y cuyo acceso no es apto para cualquier humano (sin embargo, tampoco es imposible). La isla se divide en tres áreas, la principal y centro de todo es llamada ‘Horai’, si allí se encuentran las deidades, se puede pensar que entonces allí estará el “Elixir de la vida”, ¿pero son Dioses los que viven allí?

The island, the earthly home of the "Gods", is the icing on the cake. At the beginning we are presented with the island as a divine paradise, something beyond simple human comprehension, but how is it that something so glorious doesn't let anyone get out of there alive? What I liked the most were the details that characterize the island; it is not a divine place. It is a place created based on the mixture of different religions -like Buddhism and Taoism-; it is not inhabited by gods, but it is not a deserted island either, there are different kinds of life, mysterious and unknown beings that will test both criminals and samurai. Really, as the name says, it is closer to being hell than heaven.

The use of religion is very interesting, especially the part of Taoism. On this fantasy island the laws of yin and yang force are followed, and more supremely, the force of 'Tao', the major source on the island, and whose access is not suitable for any human (however, it is not impossible either). The island is divided into three areas, the main one and center of everything is called 'Horai', if the deities are there, one would think that the "Elixir of Life" would be there, but are those who live there Gods?

Hell’s Paradise nos deja la reflexión de que no somos buenos o malos; que no está mal ser un poco egoístas y, en ocasiones, poner nuestros intereses por encima de todo; y que, además, las apariencias pueden ser engañosas. Es un anime tenso, los personajes no han terminado de escapar de un peligro cuando ya se encuentran en otro, manteniendo la expectativa. ¿Hasta qué punto es capaz de llegar el ser humano para obtener su libertad?✨

No me gusta esperar una semana para el siguiente capítulo, pero si tú aún no has visto este anime entonces tienes la suerte de poder hacer un maratón de 13 capítulos😌

Hell's Paradise leaves us with the reflection that we are not good or bad; that it is not wrong to be a little selfish and, sometimes, to put our interests above everything; and that, besides, appearances can be deceiving. It is a tense anime, the characters have not finished escaping from one danger when they are already in another, keeping the expectation. How far is the human being capable of going to obtain their freedom?✨

I didn't like to wait a week for the next episode, but if you haven't seen this anime yet then you're lucky enough to have a 13 episode marathon😌
