Book Review — Stephen King (Richard Bachman)
Some books scare you with monsters, ghosts, or supernatural creatures. Others don't need any of that. They simply take something ordinary, turn it into a nightmare, and make you wonder how far human beings can go when survival is the only thing that matters.
That's exactly how I felt about The Long Walk (1979), written by Stephen King under the pseudonym Richard Bachman.
The idea sounds almost ridiculous at first: a group of young men must keep walking, and the last one standing wins. But the more I thought about it, the more disturbing it became. Because in this story, stopping isn't an option.
📖 A Walk With No Finish Line
The story takes place in a dystopian version of the United States, where an annual competition known as the Long Walk has become a major public event.
One hundred teenage boys are selected to participate. The rules are simple: they must maintain a minimum walking speed of four miles per hour. If they slow down, they receive warnings. After exhausting their warnings, another violation means being eliminated permanently.
And by eliminated, I mean killed.
The main character is Ray Garraty, a sixteen-year-old boy from Maine who enters the competition knowing the risks, although I don't think anyone could truly understand what they're getting into until they're actually there.
As the miles pass, exhaustion, pain, hunger, fear, and sleep deprivation begin to destroy the walkers, both physically and mentally.
🧠 The Horror Is in the Mind
What surprised me most about this book is how little Stephen King needs to create tension.
There isn't a complicated mystery to solve. There isn't a monster hiding somewhere. We know the rules almost from the beginning, and we understand what will happen to anyone who fails.
And somehow, that makes everything worse.
I found myself paying attention to things that would normally seem insignificant: a sore foot, a moment of dizziness, a conversation that lasts too long, or someone who simply looks more tired than before.
In an ordinary story, those details might not matter.
Here, they can mean the difference between life and death.
🤝 Friendship in the Middle of a Nightmare
One of the things I appreciated most was the relationship between the walkers.
Characters like Peter McVries, Art Baker, and Stebbins make the journey much more interesting than a simple competition.
They talk, joke, argue, share memories, and sometimes help each other keep going.
But there's something terribly sad about all of it.
They are developing friendships with people they know probably won't survive.
I kept thinking about how strange that must feel. You can genuinely care about someone, encourage them to keep walking, and still know that only one of you can win.
It's a cruel contradiction, and I think King handles it remarkably well.
📺 When Suffering Becomes Entertainment
Perhaps the most disturbing part of The Long Walk isn't the competition itself.
It's the society watching it.
The spectators cheer, celebrate, and treat the suffering of these young men as entertainment. The event has become so normalized that people seem more interested in the spectacle than in questioning why it exists.
This made me think about how easily people can become accustomed to cruelty when it's presented as a tradition, a competition, or something everyone else accepts.
The walkers are the ones suffering, but the audience is part of what makes the horror possible.
🚶 Why Do They Keep Walking?
This is the question that stayed with me throughout the book.
The winner receives an extraordinary prize, but is any reward really worth risking your life in such a terrible way?
And perhaps more importantly, why would someone voluntarily enter a competition like this?
King doesn't give every character the same motivation. Some are driven by ambition, others by desperation, pride, or reasons they don't completely understand themselves.
I liked that because it makes the characters feel more human. People don't always make decisions based on logic, especially when they're young and convinced that something terrible will happen to someone else instead of them.
🖤 Final Thoughts
The Long Walk is one of those novels that proves Stephen King doesn't need supernatural horror to make readers uncomfortable.
The story is simple, almost painfully so. A group of boys walks down a road, and one by one, their numbers decrease.
But underneath that simplicity, there is a powerful reflection on survival, friendship, fear, competition, and the value of human life.
I particularly enjoyed how the tension grows without requiring constant action. Sometimes the most disturbing moments are simply conversations between exhausted teenagers who know that tomorrow might never come.
The book also made me appreciate how terrifying an ordinary human activity can become when someone takes away our freedom to stop.
⭐ My Rating: 95/100
I would give The Long Walk 95 out of 100.
Its greatest strength is the psychological tension. King takes a very simple premise and turns it into an exhausting, disturbing, and surprisingly emotional experience.
I also think the characters and their relationships give the story much more depth than I initially expected.
I wouldn't give it a perfect score because some stretches of the journey can feel repetitive, and the limited explanation of the society behind the competition may leave some readers wanting more.
Still, I think that repetition is partly intentional. The exhaustion becomes something the reader almost experiences alongside the characters.
And that is what makes this book so effective.
The most frightening thing about The Long Walk isn't how far these boys have to walk. It's knowing that, no matter how much they suffer, they are not allowed to stop.
