To Kill a Monkey is a Nigerian TV show that got many people talking when it came out in 2025. I saw many people on social media discussing this series, especially the ending. It is one of my favourite Nigerian series, but the thing that really broke me was the last part because of the betrayal. The story is about friendship, brotherhood, poverty, crime and betrayal. There have been different arguments about whether the betrayal at the end was supposed to happen or not, and honestly, I am one of the people who did not like the betrayal. The person who was betrayed was not a good person, but the way everything happened at the end still made me feel very emotional.
Oboz is the man who is known as the Monkey. He is a very dangerous criminal who runs a big scam business, and his criminal activities are also connected to dark spiritual practices. He has many people working for him, and some of them are graduates who could not find jobs, so they joined his group because they needed something to survive. Oboz is also very good at finding people who have useful skills and forcing them to work for him. Nobody in the community has seen his real face because he always covers his face with a monkey mask. Even the people working for him do not know what he really looks like.
Efe is an old friend of Oboz, but his life is very difficult. He has serious financial problems and cannot properly take care of his wife and children. His wife is always complaining because other men are outside hustling and bringing food home while nothing seems to be working for him. Efe has tried many things and worked hard, but things still do not get better. He reaches a point where he feels he cannot continue living like that.
One day, Efe and Oboz meet at a hotel where Efe works as a sales boy. They are both surprised because it has been a long time since they saw each other. At first, Efe does not recognize Oboz, but Oboz remembers him because Efe once saved his life when some enemies were trying to kill him. When they finally recognize each other, they are happy to meet again. Oboz asks about Efe's financial situation and realizes that his old friend is really struggling. He tells Efe that he can help him and asks if he has the mind to do the kind of work he does. Efe goes home and thinks about his family. He knows he cannot continue living in poverty and watching his wife and children suffer, so he goes back to Oboz and begs him to allow him to join the group. Oboz asks if he is sure he can do the work, but Efe says he is ready to do whatever it takes. That is how he joins the crew.
After joining Oboz, Efe's life changes completely. He becomes financially stable and starts making good money. He almost forgets what it was like to be poor. But the work they are doing is very dangerous because they are involved in serious crimes and dark activities. Efe is very intelligent and knows a lot about computers, so he comes up with an idea that can make them much more money. He tells Oboz about it, and they start using the idea. But later, they begin having problems because of how they want to share the money. Oboz wants 60 percent while Efe gets 40 percent, and this starts creating serious problems between them.
Oboz also has an enemy who wants to bring him down. The enemy has a business idea with him and wants them to share the money 50/50, but Oboz refuses because he believes the idea belongs to him, so he wants 70/30. The enemy becomes angry and starts threatening Oboz and everyone around him. Because Efe is working with Oboz, his family also becomes affected. The enemy even threatens to kill Efe's daughter. This becomes too much for Efe because he loves his family, and he starts crying and begging them to leave his family alone.
Efe later fights with Oboz and tells him that he does not want to see him again. He blames Oboz for putting his daughter's life in danger and tells him to stay away from his family. After some time, Oboz thinks about what happened and remembers how much he loves Efe as a brother. He goes back to Efe and begs him to forgive him and come back to the way they were before. He also agrees that he will tell the enemy to share the business 50/50 as Efe wanted. Efe agrees, and they become brothers again. But what Oboz does not know is that Efe already has another plan.
After they have become close again, they are together talking happily when a group of enemies suddenly surrounds them with guns and swords. Oboz sees the danger and decides to protect Efe. He tells him, "Brother, be at my back. I will protect you. Before anyone touches my brother, they have to go through me first." 🥺
This last part really made me cry. The worst surprise was finding out that Efe already knew about everything. He and the enemies had planned it so that when Oboz came back to beg him and they became brothers again, the enemies would attack and kill Oboz. Honestly, at that point I felt like entering the series myself because I was so angry with Efe. I felt like I was the one who had been betrayed. I know Oboz was a bad man and he did many terrible things, but I still had pity for him because of the way he loved his brother. He had the power to escape because of his spiritual abilities, but he chose to stay and protect Efe. Even after everything that happened between them, he still stood in front of him to protect him. But Efe still chose to betray him, and that last part was really painful to watch.
For me, the ending was the part that made this series very emotional. It showed how painful it can be when someone you trust and see as your brother is the person who betrays you. I really enjoyed To Kill a Monkey, and even though I did not like what Efe did at the end, that betrayal made the story something I will remember for a long time.
