Hello friends who love cinema, today I want to talk to you about a considered classic of cult cinema. The 2000 film titled "American Psycho" starring Christian Bale and that served as a catapult for larger projects, a film that at the time was considered a kind of commercial flop, and yet over time it gained respect for its script, story and narrative. La cinta del año 2000 titulada "American Psycho" protagonizada por Christian Bale y que le sirvió como catapulta para proyectos más grandes, una cinta que en su momento se consideró una especie de fracazo comercial, y sin embargo con el tiempo fue ganando respeto por su guion, historia y narrativa. Les hablaré de los aspectos resaltantes y por el cual me gusta tanto y así alentarlos para que la puedan ver, para aquellos que aún no la han visto.

La película comienza con un monólogo de nuestro protagnista, habla de donde vive y luego dice su nombre y su edad, Patrick Bateman, con esta introducción podemos ver claramente la dirección que va tomando el argumento en resaltar las posesiones materiales y el estatus por encima de la identidad personal. Patrick Bateman es un joven que trabaja en Wall Street y se da a entender que su familia es muy poderosa. El entorno de Patrick es igual, jovenes exitosos en los negocios pero con una profunda crisis de identidad, esta crisis es llenada con el mas extremo hedonismo, son de no importan realmente los nombres sino los trajes y los puestos que ejercen. Algo que debo añadir a esto es la atención que pone Patrick al mencionar con meticulosidad los platos que come, las bebidas que toma, los trajes que usa, los lugares que frecuenta y sin embargo no puede recordar los nombre de sus amigos ni lo que hacen realmente. Lo material esta en primer lugar, después viene lo humano y para él, lo humano solo es vacío y despreciable.

Pero para entender mejor esta especie de filosofía retorcida de estos personajes debemos comprender el contexto y la época en la que viven, estamos hablando de mediados de los 80 y la película nos habla de los excesos de la cultura YUPIE, en Latinoamerica estas carácteriscas fueron un poco diferente por lo que hizo falta mas información para entender esta realidad. Los Yupies se caracterizaban por exceso materialismo y el hedonismo, solo importaba lo material, esta cultura contrastaba de la misma forma con la Era Reagan y Margareth Thatcher, líderes mundiales del conservadurismo, estos jóvenes podrían verse como el reflejo del espíritu de la época, ola de desregulación de la economía y desmantelamiento de los servicios públicos, todo eso eranlos 80, así que Patrick Bateman desde su posición privilegiada se sentía una especia de semidios, disfrutando de las glorias de tene run gran puesto de trabajo, eso lo lleva a sentirse aún más vacía y desatar lo que el llamó su sed de sangre.

Su espiral de muerte y sangre comienza con el asesinato de un vagabundo, esta escena la considero importante porque da el primer paso en convertirse un asesino pero al hacerlo da una declaración de principios, y esto es parte de la crítica social que hace la película, basada por supuesto en el libro, donde la narración es más brutal. Aquí sin embargo Patrick Bateman se acerca al vagabundo y habla con él, pero su intención no es ayudarlo sino humillarlo, y al hacerlo le dice cosas como que se busque un trabajo y deje de ser un perderdor, que le vendría bien un cambio de actitud. Estas palabras reflejan las creencias de Patrick, y como juzgaba a las personas a través de ellas, con este complejo de superioridad que sufre todo narcicista justifica su sed de sangre. El siguiente paso es matar al vagabundo y seguir caminando como si nada, no muestra ninguna emoción humana más que la repulsión, el desprecio y el sadismo.

The second great thing that happens is the appearance of Jared Leto as Paul Allen, I could understand that this character is Patrick's obsession, since he comes dressed in the same outfits, as is customary when greeting Patrick, calls him by another name and invites him to dinner, but not before leaving his card and leaving. Todo buen clásico siempre tiene buenos díalogos y escenas increíbles, pero lo que detallaré a continuación me parece memorable. La escena de las trajetas de presentación es demasiado buena, en primer lugar porque se pueden notar muchas cosas, una de ellas es que las tarjetas reflejan la identidad de los personajes, pero si ponemos atención a los detalles, aunque cada tarjeta tiene un nombre diferente, el cargo es el mismo y el número de teléfono también. Todos aspiran al mismo cargo, Patrick es el primero en lucir su tarjeta, hablan del papel y la tinta y la fuente para las letras que usan, todos quedan sorprendidos, pero otros comienzan a sacar sus tarjetas como si fuera un partido de Poker, Patrick ve su ego herido al ver como otros alaban las tarjeta de uno de sus amigos.
La segunda cosa grandiosa que sucede es la aparición de Jared Leto como Paul Allen, pude entender que este personaje es la obsesión de Patrick, pues viene vestido con los mismos atuendos, como es costumbre, al saludar a Patrick le llama por otro nombre y lo invita a cenar, no sin antes dejar su tarjeta e irse. Claramente este Paul Allen tiene una personalidad arrolladora, es quien marca la pauta, con solo ese gesto todos guardan silencio y se disponen a observar la tarjeta, cuando Patrick la tiene en sus manos se desmorona totalmente, la actuación de Christian Bale es fenomenal, se siente realmente como el estómago se le revuelve y su piel comienza a sudar de nerviosismo. Los narcicistas son así, los chutes de alabanzas funcionan como una droga y al no tenerla sufren un bajón que los saca de su mundo de fantasía y comienzan con su comportamiento errático. Patrick Bateman lo refleja muy bien y fija su próximo obejtivo en Paul Allen, siente la necesidad de matarlo para sellar la herida de su fragil ego.

Seguidamente las muertes provocadas por Patrick Bateman reflejan su comportamiento errático, sin embargo la narrativa de la historia cambia de manera significativa, dejando a un lado lo social para centrarse en aspectos más psicologícos. Suceden escenas muy extrañas, por ejemplo cuando persigue a una chica con una motorierra y nadie parece escuchar e ir en su ayuda, luego sale del edificio con una alforja paseando el cadaver dejando un rastro de sangre y nadie parece darse cuenta, después en un breve enfrentamiento con la policía tiene buena puntería, porque mata a todos facilmente, como un videojuego, pero lo más risible es que dispara a una patrulla y esta sale volando como si hubiera lanzado una granada. Todo esto que sigue más a la lógica de un sueño nos da a entender que Patrick tiene problemas serios en la cabeza, no podemos fiarnos de su realidad, por lo que la mayoría o tal vez todas las muertes hayan sido producto de su imaginación. Esta ambiguedad planteada por la directora de la película me pareció magistral, creo que la película del Joker de Joaquin Phoenix tiene mucha inspiración en esta película, solo que en lugar de ser un joven exitoso el protagonista, es alguien considerado un perdedor fracasado por la sociedad, no por algo también está ambientada en los 80.

La escena final es fenomenal y no hace más que acrecentar esa línea que separa la realidad de la ilusión, pero no la comentaré para que puedan verla. Esta película me parece genial, una verdadera joya que representa el espíritu de aquellos días, así como "Ellos Viven" de Jhon Carpenter, donde se critíca el materialismo capitalista, el hedonismo y los excesos mientras se abandona a los más vulnerables de la sociedad. Esta película agrega los problemas psicologicos que también pueden desencadenar ciertos ambientes llenos de estres. Christian Bale te hace creer el nivel de psicopatía que padece su personaje y claramente no puedes confiar en lo que dicen sus labios. Sin más nada que agregar, la recomiendo con los ojos cerrados, es disfrutable de principio a fin, y lo mejor es el humor negro y ácido que acompaña las representaciones de cada personaje.
