Hello friends, I hope you are very well, this time I want to write about a movie that I liked a lot and that this week I had the opportunity to see it a second time, I think that second readings are really like a trip to common places but with things that you previously overlooked. The film I want to talk about briefly is Get Out, this film came out in 2017 and is the first film by director Jordan Peele. Needless to say, his first direction went so well that he won an Oscar for best original screenplay.
Hola amigos, espero que se encuentren muy bien, esta vez quiero escribir acerca de una película que me gustó mucho y que esta semana tuve la oportunidad de verla una segunda vez, creo que las segundas lecturas realemente es como un viaje a lugares comunes pero con cosas que antes pasabas por alto. De la película que quiero hablar brevemente es de Get Out, esta cinta salió en el año 2017 y es la primera película del director Jordan Peele. Demás está decir que su primera dirección salió muy bien tanto que ganó un oscar a mejor guión original.
In general, I want to talk about the resource used in this film, and I refer to the psychological theme to tell us a story. Although the main theme addresses the problem of racism in the United States, we are not talking here about a fight for the civil rights of African Americans, but about respect for their culture and the freedom to exercise it. Through awkward situations, they show us how "politically correct" is anything but correct and adequate. I think it's a good critique of today's society, where more inclusion is called for but everything is so forced that it embarrasses even African-Americans. Hence, the director plays with our mind by putting the protagonist in such a state of tension that even going to meet the in-laws is to live with the nerves.
De forma general quiero hablar acerca del recurso manejado en esta película, y me refiero al terro psicológico para contarnos una historia. Si bien el tema principal aborda el problema del racismo en los Estados Unidos, no se habla aquí de una lucha por los derechos civiles de los afroamericanos, sino del respeto por su cultura y la libertad para ejercerla. A través de situaciones incómodas, nos muestran como lo "políticamente correcto" es cualquier cosa menos correcto y adecuado. Creo que es una buena crítica a la sociedad actual, donde se pide más inclusión pero todo es tan forzado que avergüenza incluso a los afroamericanos. De allí que, el director juega con nuestra mente al poner al protagonista en un estado de tensión tan grande que incluso ir a conocer a los suegros es para vivir con los nervios de punta.
The strong point of this film apart from the script is the performance of the characters. Each one manages to keep you on edge with the dialogues they have, the cast is very well integrated by the situations they experience and I want to place special emphasis on the protagonist. Chris, a young African-American man, the boyfriend of a white girl, will go on a trip to meet his in-laws, and from the first moment that this trip is talked about, the protagonist through his body language tells us the discomfort of facing that moment, it is not just meeting the in-laws, but also the fact that it's a white family. The body language of this actor is phenomenal because you feel the terror and tension of the awkward moments, of the dialogues that seem harmless but are out of place, on more than one occasion he lets us know that he is a man with a great feeling of guilt, this feeling will be used by their hunters, as a predator takes advantage of the weaknesses of its prey, this is reflected throughout the film and teaches us the importance of overcoming the traumatic moments of our lives.
El punto fuerte de esta película a parte del guión es el desempeño de los personajes. Cada uno logra mantenerte en vilo con los diálogos que tienen, el elenco está muy bien integrado por las situaciones que expérimentan y quiero hacer especial énfasis en el protagoinista. Chris, un joven afroamericano, novio de una chica blanca realizará un viaje para conocer a sus suegros, ya desde el primer momento que se habla de este viaje el protagonista a través de su lenguaje corporal nos dice la incomodidad de enfrentar ese momento, no es simplemente conocer a los suegros, sino también el hecho de que sea una familia blanca. El lenguaje corporal de este actor es fenomenal porque se siente el terror y la tensión de los momentos incómodos, de los diálogos que parecen inofensivos pero están fuera de lugar, en más de una ocasión nos deja saber que es un hombre con un gran sentimiento de culpa, este sentimiento será aprovechado por sus cazadores, como un depredador se aprovecha de las debilidades de sus presas, esto se refleja a lo largo de la película y nos enseña lo importante de la superación de los momentos traumáticos de nuestras vidas.
On the other hand, in contrast to the protagonist is his girlfriend Rose, a white girl from a very well-off family who always treats Chris with maternal care, this detail always caught my attention and I think that the relationship between Rose and Chris is the incentive for calm the feeling of guilt, if you have seen the movie or if you plan to see it you will understand what I mean. Thus, Rose, with an overprotective attitude, is always taking care of Chris, she even throws his cigarettes at him to make him stop smoking, but far from being an altruistic act or love, it is pure material interest. Rose knows how to hide her intentions well and behind her expressive smile and her eyes that hardly ever blink, you can see the horror story that Chris will experience.
Por otro lado en contraste con el protagonista está su novia Rose, chica blanca de familia muy acomodada que siempre trata a Chris con un cuidado maternal, siempre me llamó la atención a este detalle y pienso que la relación desde Rose hacia Chris es el aliciente para calmar el sentimiento de culpa, si han visto la película o si planean verla entenderán a lo que me refiero. Así pues, Rose con una actitud sobreprotectora siempre esta cuidando de Chris, hasta le tira los cigarrillos para que deje de fumar, pero lejos de ser un acto altruista o de amor, es de puro ineteres material. Rose sabe ocultar bien sus intenciones y tras su sonrisa expresiva y sus ojos que casi nunca pestañean puede verse la historia de horror que Chris experimentará.
Another of the strong points and that greatly helps the atmosphere of the film are the symbols, this film is full of symbols with a very deep meaning since things are taken from popular culture and elements of the oldest oscultism to make us understand that We are facing an unusual experience. This will give us an indication that Chris is dealing with very careful people and that they know very well what they are doing. For example, one of the most recurrent symbols is the deer, at the beginning of the film there is an accident with a deer and I think it is the anchor of the events, it works as a warning signal for Chris and for us as viewers, it's like that "Broken Bridge" or "don't cross" symbol.
Many stuffed deer also appear as trophies at Chris's in-laws' house, indicating that they are both hunters and people with a very low level of empathy. One of the movie posters shows a broken glass, this symbol is used to make us understand that there will be a process of personality dissociation, where the conscious mind of an individual will be split into many pieces and then give rise to new personalities. that will integrate a single body, and finally a Monarch butterfly, this symbol is recurrent in the cinema to talk about the use of mind control techniques.
Otro de los puntos fuertes y que ayuda mucho a la atmósfera de la película son los símbolos, esta cinta esta llena de símbolos con un significado muy profundo ya que se toman cosas de la cultura popular y elementos del oscultismo más antiguo para darnos a entender que estamos ante una experiencia fuera de lo común. Esto nos dará indicio de que Chris está tratando con personas de mucho cuidado y que saben muy bien lo que hacen. Por ejemplo, uno de los símbolos más recurrentes es el venado, al inicio de la película hay un accidente con un venado y creo que es el ancla de los acontecimientos, funciona como una señal de advertencia para Chris y para nosotros como espectadores, es como ese símbolo de "Puente Roto", o "no cruce".
También aparecen muchos venados disecados como trofeos en la casa de los suegros de Chris, lo que indica que son cazadores y a su vez personas con un nivel de empatía muy bajo. Uno de los posters de la película puede verse un cristal roto, este símbolo se utiliza para darnos a entender que habrá un proceso de disociación de la personalidad, donde la mente consciente de un individuo será partida en muchas piezas y luego dará origen a nuevas personalidades que integrarán un solo cuerpo, y por último una mariposa Monarca, esté símbolo es recurrente en el cine para hablarnos del uso de técnicas de control mental.
Finally, the photography is very well done, the director with some open shots shows us the landscape that does not make us suspect the evil it contains, as well as the night shots indicate us and make us feel the shelter of darkness for Chris's sadness. with intense blues as for the sinister plans of Rose and her family. The characters unfold very well and I think that their performance is very natural and fits very well with the scenarios, nothing is out of place, even the clothing of the characters can indicate what they represent within the political context of the United States, we cannot forget that this film touches on a sensitive issue, in a masterful way and with a very different intention than the usual clichéd social criticism. This film makes you understand that something more intense and profound is cooking and uses that context very well to capture it in the work and at the same time be a reflection of reality.
Por último la fotografía está muy bien trabajada, el director con unos planos abiertos nos muestra el paisaje que para nada hace sospechar del mal que encierra, así también las tomas nocturnas nos indican y nos hacen sentir el amparo de la oscuridad para la tristeza de Chris con azules intensos como para los siniestros planes de Rose y su familia. Los personajes se desenvuelven muy bien y pienso que su actuación es muy natural y se acopla muy biena los escenarios, nada esta desencajado, incluso la vestimenta de los personajes nos puede indicar lo que representan dentro del contexto político de los Estados Unidos, no podemos olvidar que esta película toca un tema sensible, de una forma magistral y con una intención muy diferente a la crítica social cliché de siempre. Está película te hace comprender que algo más intenso y profundo se cocina y utiliza muy bien ese contexto para plasmarlo en la obra y al mismo tiempo ser un reflejo de la realidad.
I end my contribution by commenting that I think it is an exceptional film, very refreshing because I am tired of the cheap terror of special effects, clichéd places and meaningless screams. I like the discomfort, the suspense, the tension, I like to feel that my mind is taken to test the limits of fear and horror and this film achieves it, I have to comment that there are some flaws in the script but they do not make a dent in its quality, no script is perfect, for the rest it is an unmissable recommendation and if you have already seen it, do not forget to comment what you thought. It is a film with many edges that could be analyzed using different approaches, I think psychoanalysis would make great use of it. Well, this has been all I say goodbye until a new opportunity. Finalizo mi aporte comentando que me parece una cinta excepcional, muy refrescante porque estoy harto del terror barato de efectos especiales, lugares clichés y gritos sin sentidos. Me gusta la incomodidad, el suspenso, la tensión, me gusta sentir que mi mente es llevada a probar los límetes del miedo y el horror y esta cinta lo logra, he de comentar que hay algunos fallos en el guion pero que no hacen mella a su calidad, ningún guion es perfecto, por lo demás es una recomendación imperdible y si ya la has visto no dejes de comentar que te pareció. Es una película con muchas aristas que podría analizarse utilizando diferentes enfoques, creo que se aprovecharía mucho desde el psicoanális.
