The Last House

My fellow movie lovers, it’s a pleasure to share this with you. Lately, I’ve made it a point to get back to what I’m passionate about and what entertains me: watching my favorite movies and TV shows. And even though my watch list is long, I’m going to take it one step at a time, starting with the most recent and working my way back to the older ones.

This time, I’m bringing you a review of a recent movie—as they say, practically fresh off the press—since this film was released just recently, that is, this year, hehe.

Mis amigos cineastas, un gusto compartir con ustedes. Estos días me he dado la tarea de volver a lo que me apasiona y entretiene, ver mis películas y series, y aunque mi lista de pendientes por ver es larga, voy a ir paso a paso, de las más recientes a las más antiguas.

En esta oportunidad les traigo la reseña de una película reciente, como dicen por ahí, salida del horno, prácticamente, pues este film se estrenó hace poco, es decir, este año, jeje.

The Last House shows us how an inexplicable event traps this family in their home, unable to leave, completely confined. As time passes, their supplies run low, and they must learn to survive while discovering what lies hidden in the darkness and the mysterious force that has them trapped.

Trapped in their home—a man, his wife, and their two children—with all the doors and windows shut tight, unable to open them. How did this happen? No one knows, but they aren’t the only ones. When they look around, they find their neighbors in the same situation, unable to understand what’s happening—whether it’s the government or some paranormal event. With no cell service, completely cut off from the outside world, and facing torrential downpours—rain that’s both uncontrollable and strange—days, weeks, months, and even years pass.

The Last House nos muestra cómo un suceso inexplicable, retiene a esta familia en su casa, sin poder salir, totalmente confinados. A medida que pasa el tiempo, las provisiones escasean y deben aprender a sobrevivir, mientras descubren qué es lo que esconde la oscuridad y esa fuerza misteriosa que los tiene atrapados.

Atrapados en su casa, un hombre, con su esposa y sus dos hijos, todas las puertas y ventanas cerradas, sin poder abrirlas. ¿Cómo sucedió? Nadie lo sabe, pero no son los únicos. Cuando se ponen a ver, sus vecinos se encuentran en la misma situación, sin poder entender qué está pasando, si es el gobierno o algún evento paranormal. Sin señal de conexión, totalmente incomunicados, con diluvios fuertes, una lluvia incontrolable y extraña a la vez, así pasan los días, semanas, meses e incluso años.

This reminded me a little of the COVID pandemic, when we had to stay home, unable to go out much—only when necessary—and remain on high alert to avoid infection. The lockdown took a toll on many people, but we were still connected to the rest of the world; in this movie, the characters had only each other and their neighbors, but they were isolated, and over time, they couldn’t take it anymore.

There’s no denying it: the film starts off well, with that touch of suspense; the mystery—not knowing exactly what’s really going on outside—keeps you hooked for about half an hour, so to speak; after that, it starts to lose its appeal.

Esto me hizo recordar un poco a la pandemia del Covid, donde debíamos estar en casa, sin poder salir mucho, solamente lo necesario, en alerta, para evitar el contagio. El encierro a muchos les afectó, pero teníamos comunicación con el resto del mundo; en esta película, solo se tenían a ellos y a sus vecinos, pero estaban solos y, con el tiempo, no aguantaron.

No se puede negar, el film comienza bien, con ese toque de suspenso; el misterio, sin saber con exactitud qué está ocurriendo realmente afuera, te atrapa por una media hora, por decirlo de alguna manera; ya después, va perdiendo sentido.

It has a slow-paced yet repetitive plot, ultimately becoming a story of survival. They didn’t put much effort into adding more action, that touch of horror that supposedly defined it, or at least a little more suspense; everything revolved around the family and their struggle to survive while facing those who kept them locked up there.

The movie is entertaining—there’s no denying that—but it still lacked more development, so to speak, more context; there are parts where it gets tedious. It had good performances and does its job of entertaining and passing the time, but that’s about it—it’s not something worth watching again.

But that’s just my opinion; if you’ve seen it, let me know what you thought.👇

Tiene un escenario pausado y, a la vez, repetitivo, donde termina siendo una historia de sobrevivencia. No se esforzaron mucho por ponerle más acción, ese toque de terror que supuestamente la caracterizaba, o por lo menos algo más de suspenso; todo giraba en torno a la familia y su lucha por sobrevivir enfrentando a quienes mantenían allí encerrados.

La película es entretenida, no se le puede negar; aun así, le faltó más desarrollo, como quien dice, mayor contexto; hay partes donde se vuelve tediosa. Tuvo buenas actuaciones, cumple con su cometido de entretener y pasar el rato, pero hasta allí, no es algo que valga la pena volver a ver.
