You'd think that if you're watching a movie starring a Golden Globe winner and Oscar nominee, you'd expect it to be high quality. After all, after a hit like Secret Agent last season, you'd expect him to follow suit. Not so. The Last House, a Netflix production, has been trending in recent weeks, and I've read/seen several reviews generally praising its horror and plot. I don't know if I saw a different version, but honestly, I didn't find it anything special. I think it's just another forgettable film, like so many others Netflix releases.
Se supone que si estamos viendo una película en donde un ganador del Golden Globe y nominado a los Oscars es el protagonista se pudiera entender que el film en cuestión es de calidad. Porque claro, después de haber hecho una película como Agente Secreto, la cual arrasó la temporada pasada, uno pensaría que más o menos debería de seguir la misma senda. No fue así. La última casa, producción de Netflix, es una que ha estado en el top en las últimas semanas y de la cual he leído/visto algunas reseñas en general alabando su terror y trama. No se si yo vi otra película pero la realidad es que para mi no me pareció la gran cosa, creo que es una más del montón que quedará en olvido rápido, como casi muchas de las cosas que hace Netflix.
We have a family: Ann (Greta Lee) and Jason (Wagner Moura), who have two children and live happily in a typical American house and neighborhood. One day, a downpour arrives, but more than that, it's a terrible deluge that puts everyone on alert. The thing is, this rain didn't come alone; it brought a kind of control through the water itself, trapping people in their homes, unable to even open the doors and windows; every way out was sealed off. At first, it was all cool because, well, they were locked in, but they had everything they needed to survive: food, water, electricity, medicine, etc. But as the days went by, the situation began to worsen to the point that rationing supplies became the norm.
Tenemos a una familia cuya mamá Ann (Greta Lee) y el papá Jason (Wagner Moura) tienen dos hijos y que viven felizmente en la típica casa y vecindario de Estados Unidos. Un buen día llega una lluvia, pero más que eso es un terrible aguacero el cual pone en alerta a todo el mundo. La cosa es que esa lluvia no llegó sola, trajo una especie de control a través de la propia agua que hacía que las personas se quedaran encerradas en sus casas sin poder ni siquiera abrir las puertas y ventanas; toda forma de salir estaba sellada. Al principio todo era cool porque bueno, estaban encerrados pero tenían todo para sobrevivir: comida, agua, luz, medicinas, etc. Pero conforme fueron pasando los días la situación se comienza a complicar al punto de que el racionamiento de provisiones se vuelve una norma.
The thing is, days, weeks, months, even years go by, and that family remains trapped in that house, unable to open a window and breathe fresh air. It gets to a point where, beyond the struggle for food and water, survival becomes an incredibly difficult mental exercise, and that's precisely what defines the terror of this film, at least for me—it is, after all, a survival thriller. But in parallel, outside in the world, there are unknown creatures exerting control over the humans. So, to the terror of being trapped, you have to add the "terror" of being hunted by something unknown, because yes, the purpose of these beings is to make people disappear. Look, the film works as a survival thriller; as a horror film, it doesn't work at all.
El detalle es que pasan días, semanas, meses y hasta años y esa familia sigue en esa casa sin poder abrir una ventana y respirar aire fresco. Llega un punto en donde más allá del tema de la comida y el agua sobrevivir se convierte es un ejercicio mental durísimo y es eso precisamente lo que define el terror de este film, por lo menos para mi, por algo esto es un thriller de supervivencia. Pero es que en paralelo, afuera en el mundo exterior, hay unas criaturas desconocidas que son las que están ejerciendo ese control hacia los humanos entonces al terror de estar encerrados hay que sumarle el "terror" de estar siendo cazados por algo desconocido, porque si, el propósito de esos seres es desparecer a las personas. A ver, la película como thriller de supervivencia funciona; como un film de terror no, pero en lo absoluto.
There is a certain mystery, intrigue, or even suspense in not knowing what's out there, and that's sometimes noticeable, but it's not effective or truly unsettling. There were times when I thought I was watching a Bear Grylls show, the Discovery Channel adventurer who survived extreme situations. I never felt the connection to a horror film as they try to sell it. I also didn't really understand the purpose of these creatures because it's simply contradictory; their objective is clear, well, more or less, because the viewer has to infer it, but their actions are not so clear, especially when we see the ending. You annihilate humanity, but then it turns out you're compassionate because what you were looking for was simply empathy? That's something that threw me for a loop. It's simple: for me, the plot development, as far as these creatures are concerned, doesn't make much sense.
Si que hay cierto misterio, intriga o hasta suspenso por no saber que hay afuera y eso a veces se percibe pero de ahí a que sea efectivo o algo que la verdad genere inquietud, pues no. Hay veces en donde pensé que estaba viendo un programa de Bear Grylls, el aventurero de Discovery Channel que sobrevivía a situaciones extremas. Nunca sentí la conexión con un film de terror como lo quieren vender. Tampoco entendí mucho el propósito de estas criaturas porque sencillamente se contradice; su objetivo es claro, bueno, más o menos porque el espectador lo tiene que inferir, pero su accionar no tanto y más cuando vemos el final. Aniquilas a la humanidad pero después resulta que eres compasivo porque lo que buscabas era simplemente empatía? - es algo que me generó un cortocircuito. Es simple: para mi el desarrollo de la trama, en lo que a estas criaturas se refiere, no tiene mucho sentido.
As far as the audiovisuals go, it's alright. The CGI for these creatures is decent, and there are a couple of scenes where the tension and anguish surface a bit. The truth is, there are some redeeming qualities in this department; it's not all bad. The acting is similar—nothing remarkable, but it does what the story demands. Moura is perhaps the highlight here; he's the one who best portrays the turning point. In short, it's a movie to watch and pass the time, but it's nothing extraordinary, far from it. I honestly expected much more from this film. I still recommend it because everyone has to form their own opinion, but know that this isn't horror; it's pure, unadulterated survival. I've included the trailer below; it's less than two hours long.
En lo que a lo audiovisual se refiere pues está bien, el CGI de esta criaturas está decente, hay un par de escenas en donde la tensión y la angustia aflora un poco; la realidad es que hay cosas salvables en este departamento, no todo es malo. Las actuaciones pues en la misma línea, nada destacable pero cumple con lo que pide la historia. Moura es quizás el punto más alto acá, es quien mejor interpreta el quiebre de todo. En fin, es una película para ver y pasar el rato pero no es nada extraordinaria, esta lejos de serlo. Esperaba bastante más de este film, honestamente. Yo todo lo recomiendo porque cada quien tiene que hacerse su opinión pero sepan que esto no es terror, es supervivencia pura y dura. Les dejo el tráiler por acá abajo, dura menos de dos horas.
