Cuando Cobra Kai llegó a nuestras vidas por allá en el 2018 fue complicado no emocionarse y es que Karate Kid había sido una de las sagas más importantes y vistas de muchas personas, me incluyo; las enseñanzas del señor Miyagi, todos los conflictos en el que Daniel se metía solo por no ser el malo de la partida o por ser muy "bueno" y obviamente por todo el contexto de peleas de karate que siempre veíamos. Tramas en Estados Unidos y hasta en Japón fueron las encargadas de darle vida a unos personajes que hasta el sol de hoy perduran, prueba de ello es esta serie. Creo que el éxito de esta serie, porque si, pienso que le ha ido bien, recaen en dos aspectos: el nostálgico y en el cambio de perspectiva.

When Cobra Kai came into our lives back in 2018 it was difficult not to get excited because Karate Kid had been one of the most important sagas and seen by many people, including myself; the teachings of Mr. Miyagi, all the conflicts in which Daniel got into just for not being the bad guy or for being very “good” and obviously for all the context of karate fights that we always saw. Plots in the United States and even in Japan were in charge of giving life to characters that to this day endure, proof of which is this series. I think the success of this series, because yes, I think it has done well, lies in two aspects: the nostalgic and the change of perspective.

El nostálgico porque es evidente que el gancho de esto es haber traído a casi todos los personajes originales a la serie, con excepción de Pat Morita por razones obvias. Y el cambio de perspectiva tiene que ver con que en las películas siempre entendimos que el bueno era Daniel pero con el desarrollo de esta trama vimos la historia desde el otro lado, desde el punto de vista de Johnny Lawrence y pudimos ver que Larusso no era tan inocente como parecía, y así con muchas cosas más. Esto no les niego que fue un shock al mismo tiempo de algo super interesante lo que al final hacía que cada temporada uno la esperara con muchas ganas.

The nostalgic one because it is evident that the hook of this is to have brought almost all the original characters to the series, with the exception of Pat Morita for obvious reasons. And the change of perspective has to do with the fact that in the movies we always understood that the good guy was Daniel but with the development of this plot we saw the story from the other side, from Johnny Lawrence's point of view and we could see that Larusso was not as innocent as he seemed, and so on with many other things. This I do not deny that it was a shock at the same time of something super interesting which in the end made you look forward to each season.

Lamentablemente uno de estos dos recursos conforme iban pasando las temporadas se comenzó a acabar y es que ya no hay personajes míticos que mostrar, o por lo menos no que yo recuerde. Esa esencia de esperar la aparición de uno de estos actores se ha ido perdiendo. Sabiendo esto entramos en la sexta temporada y final de la serie, un final que está dividido en TRES partes, esta que acaba de terminar, la segunda para noviembre y la tercera para el 2025. Un completo desastre si me lo preguntan. Esta primera parte consta de 5 capítulos los cuales nos muestra lo previo al torneo Sekai Taikai, uno torneo mundial de Karate en donde van unos pocos elegidos.

Unfortunately, as the seasons went by, one of these two resources began to run out and there are no more mythical characters to show, or at least not that I remember. That essence of waiting for the appearance of one of these actors has been lost. Knowing this we enter the sixth season and end of the series, a finale that is divided into THREE parts, this one that just ended, the second for November and the third for 2025. A complete disaster if you ask me. This first part consists of 5 chapters which show us the previous to the Sekai Taikai tournament, a world Karate tournament where a chosen few go.

Lo que me aburre tremendamente de esto es que hay dramas innecesarios y muy repetidos entre los integrantes del dojo, había que escoger a unos pocos y esto llevó a que los dramas típicos entre estos jóvenes salieran a la luz pero también el eterno roce entre Daniel y Johnny se despierta de vez en cuando, es imposible que estén dos capítulos sin pelearse. Esta fórmula entiendo que para algunos es "cómica", de hecho puede ser, pero cuando se abusa de ella el resultado termina cansando. Es como ver un loop infinito: se pelean, se entienden, se vuelven a pelear, se cambian de bando, se contentan de nuevo y así sucesivamente. Tristemente la novedad se perdió hace un par de temporadas atrás.

What bores me tremendously about this is that there are unnecessary and repeated dramas among the members of the dojo, it was necessary to choose a few and this led to the typical dramas between these young people came to light but also the eternal friction between Daniel and Johnny is awakened from time to time, it is impossible for them to go two chapters without fighting. This formula I understand that for some is “comical”, in fact it can be, but when it is abused the result ends up tiring. It's like watching an infinite loop: they fight, they understand each other, they fight again, they change sides, they make up again and so on. Sadly the novelty was lost a couple of seasons ago.

Pero el cambio de perspectiva es de las cosas con las que aún quieren sorprender al espectador. Pareciera que ya no podían haber más sorpresas pero las hubo y eso es algo que hay que aplaudírselo a los creadores y escritores, las persistencia en la busqueda de cambios de tramas a nivel histórico. Y es que si amigos, de nuevo se nos vuelve a poner en duda la integridad o el actuar de quizás el personaje más querido por todos. Lo bueno de esto es que es posible que haya un margen para el desarrollo de este acontecimiento y veamos algo surrealista, es decir, me imagino que trabajarán para profundizar en esto y que no quede en algo que solo sirvió para afectar el comportamiento de unos pocos. O por lo menos eso es lo que espero.

But the change of perspective is one of the things with which they still want to surprise the viewer. It seemed that there could be no more surprises but there were and that is something to applaud the creators and writers, the persistence in the search for plot changes at the historical level. And yes, friends, once again the integrity or the actions of perhaps the most beloved character by all is questioned. The good thing about this is that it is possible that there is a margin for the development of this event and we will see something surreal, that is, I imagine that they will work to deepen this and that it does not remain something that only served to affect the behavior of a few. Or at least that is what I hope.

Seguimos viendo a un John Kreese aferrado a un pasado, pareciera que nunca va a superar esos demonios que lo persiguen. En su defensa Daniel y Lawrence están en las mismas pero lo de él creo que va más allá. Es un buen personaje, mejor antagonista. En fin, fue una primera parte la cual sirve como trampolín o preámbulo para el torneo en cuestión, de hecho todo termina en la presentación del mismo. Hubo un par de hechos relevantes que cambiaron un poco el cómo venía la historia pero en términos generales fue un más de lo mismo. Ojalá pase algo trascendental en noviembre, la serie lo necesita con urgencia, necesita una sacudida importante para que vuelva a tener la chispa del comienzo y vaya cerrando de la mejor manera, sería una lástima que termine tan baja.

We continue to see a John Kreese clinging to a past, it seems that he will never overcome those demons that haunt him. In his defense, Daniel and Lawrence are on the same page, but I think he's more than that. He's a good character, a better antagonist. Anyway, it was a first part which serves as a springboard or preamble to the tournament in question, in fact it all ends in the presentation of the tournament. There were a couple of relevant events that changed a bit the way the story was going, but in general terms it was more of the same. Hopefully something transcendental will happen in November, the series needs it urgently, it needs an important jolt to regain the spark of the beginning and to close in the best way, it would be a pity if it ends so low.
