Hello friends, good vibes to everyone.
Hola amigos, buenas vibras para todos.
I’m not sure why, but I was really looking forward to seeing this film; the fact that it’s a Western, along with its two leads, caught my interest. Generally, this genre tends to be slow—moving at a much more measured pace, given the context in which these stories unfold—though the action or the plot itself usually manages to compensate for that lack of speed. Does that happen here? I’d say yes, but only to an extent. The plot is solid, but very basic; there are no surprises. The action does get interesting once the film really kicks into gear, though I’m not sure if that happens a bit too late in the movie. What we have here is a drama—a survival thriller set during the American Civil War, around 1865—which tests the protagonist’s mettle as she fights to survive, while also revealing her to be a person of strong principles.
As I mentioned, the story unfolds during the harsh winter of 1865, in a forest far removed from everything. Adeline "Ada" Horn (Mackenzie Foy) is a young woman left in charge of a Union Army outpost following the death of her father—a renowned general who served until his final days. She is far from the typical, helpless girl who fears everything; Ada possesses a strong character—she is spirited, daring, and deeply committed to helping others, all while harboring a fierce zest for life. Solitude does not bother her, as she understands her mission and the purpose behind her presence in this remote location, where she lives in relative tranquility. However, this peace is not destined to last: Ada comes into possession of a cache of gold—not by some stroke of divine providence, but through her own keen ability to piece things together—a discovery that will ultimately bring her far more trouble than solutions.
What Ada doesn’t know is that the gold is stolen and that she will soon encounter the men who are searching for it. A group of men in army uniforms, led by Fiddler (Sean Bean), arrive at her cabin, asking for shelter and a place to rest. While Ada is quite perceptive, she can also be extremely naive; it doesn’t take long for her to realize that something is amiss. Eventually, the men reveal their true intentions, setting off a tense and distressing dynamic between them, Ada, and a woman they are holding hostage. I won’t criticize the film for its slow pace—that’s simply the nature of the Western genre; in fact, I find that austere, stripped-back quality quite compelling. From the start, Ada is portrayed as someone prepared for anything, and the arrival of these men only makes her character more intriguing—we see how she consistently stays one step ahead, questioning everything around her.
These men are violent by nature; they try to appear otherwise, but they fail—especially when faced with someone who constantly looks down on them. The action, as I mentioned, is decent; there are some good sequences filled with suspense, chases, and intrigue. The film reaches its climax when the gunfire breaks out. Now, is it believable that a girl—barely more than a child, regardless of how competent or clever she might be—could stand up to four men? I’ll leave that for each viewer to decide. Of course, she isn’t alone; another woman ends up providing significant help, but Ada is essentially the linchpin for the entire backstory involving the gold and these men. The plot isn’t complex—it’s very easy to follow—so what really matters is how it unfolds and how it concludes.
At the outset, I mentioned that I wanted to see this film, and one of the reasons was its cast. Let’s start with Mackenzie Foy—known for The Conjuring and Interstellar—who hadn’t appeared on screen for some time. She is one of the best parts of the film—arguably the best—as nearly the entire weight of the movie rests on her shoulders. It’s a very well-crafted character, and I really liked her performance and how completely she made the role her own. Then there’s the ever-reliable Sean Bean—known as Ned Stark in Game of Thrones and Boromir in The Lord of the Rings. It’s always a bit strange to see him as an antagonist or villain, even though he’s played such roles many times before. Here, he portrays a ruthless, rugged outlaw—a man who strikes women and shows no mercy. Did I buy his performance? Only to an extent. It’s not that he did a bad job—he certainly tries to sell it—but it felt very average; one might have expected something more. Ultimately, it’s a decent, watchable, and entertaining film, with some solid moments of action and tension. The ending is very fitting for who Ada is. It has a runtime of an hour and a half. I’ve included the trailer here for you to check out.
- a medias.
Alright folks, that’s all for today, I hope you enjoyed it. ¡Sending a big hug to you all; see you next time!
