When you’re looking for something to watch and come across a film starring Ethan Hawke and Russell Crowe, it’s very hard to pass it up. In Spanish, it’s titled "El peso de la libertad" ("The Weight of Freedom")—a name that captures the plot far better than just "The Weight." The story takes us back nearly 100 years, to 1933, during the Great Depression in the United States—a time when smuggling—in this case, gold—became a means of survival for many, despite the inherent dangers. It’s a historical film, rich in themes of survival and drama, centering on the plight of a desperate father. I believe it’s sometimes worth seeking out films that fall outside the mainstream; despite its high-profile cast, this movie, in my view, hasn’t received the attention it deserves.
Cuando estás buscando que ver y te encuentras una película protagonizada por Ethan Hawke y Russell Crowe muy difícilmente la dejas pasar. Traducida al español se llama "el peso de la libertad", un nombre que enmarca mucho mejor su trama que simplemente The Weight y es que en esta oportunidad nos tenemos que ir hacia casi 100 años atrás, al 1933, en donde en Estados Unidos había una gran crisis, la Gran Depresión, lo que hacía que el contrabando de lo que sea, en este caso del oro, se convirtiera en un sustento para muchos a pesar de los peligros que conllevaba todo aquello. Esta es una película histórica que tiene mucho de supervivencia y drama y es que nos pone en la situación de un padre desesperado. Creo que a veces es necesario ver films que no estén en el mainstream porque este, a pesar de sus actores, siento que no está donde debería.
We meet Murphy (Ethan Hawke), a war veteran and mechanic who is the father of a beautiful young girl named Penny. He is raising his daughter on his own, but his situation is difficult: he is unemployed, has just been evicted from his home, and—to make matters worse—ends up in a street fight while trying to protect his daughter. As a result, he is sent to prison, and Penny is placed in foster care while he serves his sentence. In those days, convicts were put to work for the state; in Murphy’s case, this means breaking stones for road construction. However, his luck seems to take a turn when Clancy (Russell Crowe)—a man of considerable power who oversees the entire operation—offers him a deal that is hard to refuse.
Tenemos a Murphy (Ethan Hawke) quien es un veterano de guerra, mecánico y padre de una bella niña llamada Penny. Él está criando solo a su hija pero la situación es complicada, está desempleado, lo acaban de desalojar de su casa y para más colmo se termina involucrando en una pelea callejera precisamente por cuidar a su hija. Esto hace que lo metan en la cárcel por un tiempo dejando a Penny en un hogar de acogida mientras el cumple su condena. En aquellos tiempos a los convictos los ponían a trabajar para el estado siendo este el caso de Murphy que termina picando piedra para la construcción de carreteras. Pero su suerte parece cambiar y es que el jefe de todo es Clancy (Russell Crowe), un tipo con bastante poder, le propone un trato el cual será difícil de rechazar.
At that time, the possession of gold is on the verge of becoming illegal, leading many mine owners to seek a way to escape with their stash. The deal is as follows: Murphy, along with four other men, must smuggle gold bars from point A to point B within a set timeframe. Once the gold is delivered, the papers granting freedom to Murphy and the others will be signed. Given his situation, our protagonist readily agrees—motivated by thoughts of his daughter. What he doesn’t realize is that the journey will prove far more complicated than expected, both due to the unforgiving nature of the jungle and the growing distrust fueled by the greed of having so much gold in their possession. While such films might initially seem slow-paced, the reality is quite the opposite; the plot is deeply compelling, with the unpredictable lurking around every corner. It is a survival thriller where one must contend with the most dangerous predator of all: a greedy man. Watching the tension gradually mount is part of what makes this film so excellent.
En esa época la tenencia de oro está a punto de ser ilegal por lo que muchos dueños de minas buscarán escapar con el. La trato es el siguiente: Murphhy, junto a otros 4 hombres, deberán contrabandear unos lingotes de oro de un punto A a un punto B en determinados días. Una vez dicho oro sea entregado, los papeles de la libertad de Murphy y el resto serán firmados. Dada la situación de nuestro protagonista claramente aceptó, lo hizo pensando en su hija. Lo que no sabe es que aquel viaje sería mucho más complicado de lo esperado tanto por lo implacable de la selva como por las actitudes y desconfianzas que se comenzarían a generar por la avaricia de tener tanto oro en sus manos. Estas películas de buenas a primeras pueden parecer que son lentas pero la realidad es que no, su trama es sumamente interesante ya que es una en donde lo impredecible está a la orden del día. Es el thriller de supervivencia en el que tienes que sobrevivir al depredador más terrible de todos: un hombre codicioso. Ver como poco a poco se va tensionando el ambiente es parte de top que es este film.
In theory, these men know each other and have spent a great deal of time together; the catch is that they are accompanied by two others—the eyes of the man who owns the gold—who may well have different intentions. Constantly having to watch your back can be exhausting, and when you add the treacherous nature of the journey, the result is a highly entertaining film. There is an ever-present, underlying tension, and because it’s a race against time, the stakes feel even higher. The plot is set in motion by a catalyst: Anna (Julia Jones), a Native American woman who joins the group and proves to be a key figure throughout the journey. It is a very well-crafted film; the outdoor cinematography is incredible, and the scenes set in the wilderness are top-tier, capturing a sense of extreme adventure. With betrayals, murders, and blackmail, it truly has a bit of everything. Before you know it, you’re completely glued to the screen—it’s the kind of drama that is well worth watching.
En teoría estos hombres se conocen, han compartido mucho tiempo juntos; el detalla es que con ellos van otros dos, (los ojos del dueño del oro), quienes quizás tengan otras intenciones. Estar constantemente cuidando de tus espaldas puede ser agotador y si hace le sumamos lo complicado del camino pues tenemos una película muy entretenida de ver. Siempre hay una tensión latente que al ser una carrera contrarreloj hace que todo sea más estresante. En la trama hay un catalizador, Anna (Julia Jones), una nativo americana que se una al grupo y termina siendo pieza clave en todo el recorrido. Es un film muy bien hecho, los exteriores son increíbles, las escenas en medio de la naturaleza son top porque tienen un toque de aventura extrema, hay traiciones, asesinatos, chantajes; realmente de todo un poco. Sin darte cuenta te quedas pegado a la pantalla, es de esos dramas que valen mucho la pena de ver.
The performances are excellent—you wouldn’t expect anything less from Hawke and Crowe. Both actors fully immerse themselves in their roles; Ethan’s performance is more intense, while Russell Crowe’s understated approach is equally striking. In fact, the entire cast is incredible; the supporting performances are truly top-notch. Everything comes together perfectly—it’s a high-quality, well-rounded film. I really enjoyed it; although it runs for nearly two hours, the time flies by. As for the ending, it’s pretty much what you’d expect regarding the characters' ultimate fates—though one outcome might come as a surprise, given the nature of the film—but, overall, it’s a very satisfying conclusion. Like I said, it has everything. Highly recommended if you’re looking for a well-crafted film with an engaging plot. I’ve included the trailer below so you can take a look.
Las actuaciones son excelentes, no se puede esperar menos de Hawke y Crowe. Los dos se meten de lleno en sus papeles, el de Ethan es más intenso pero igual la sobriedad de Russell Crowe es muy evidente. De hecho todo el elenco lo hace increíble, las interpretaciones de los personajes "secundarios" están muy a la altura la verdad. Es muy redondo todo, la película es un paquete completo de mucha calidad. La disfruté mucho, dura casi dos horas pero realmente se te pasa muy rápido el tiempo. Su final yo creería que es el esperado en lo que a destino final de los personajes se refiere, quizás hay uno que puede sorprender dada la naturaleza de la película pero en líneas generales es un cierre bastante bueno. Ya lo dije, tiene de todo. Muy recomendable si quieren ver un film bien hecho y con una trama interesante. Les dejo el tráiler por acá abajo para que le echen un vistazo.
