Hello friends, good vibes to everyone.
Hola amigos, buenas vibras para todos.
We’ve set horror aside, and now we’re going to focus on all those films and series that fell by the wayside during the month of October—it’s time to catch up. If there is one scourge that has plagued a country like the United States, it is racism; for decades, this monster—which, to me, is a disease—has haunted millions of people, affecting not only Black individuals but any minority that happens to be disliked by certain groups. This film, based on a true story, shows us that the law is sometimes insufficient to achieve justice; at times, one must look the other way to secure it. All of this unfolds against the backdrop of the United States in the 1960s—specifically in the South, in Mississippi—where a social struggle was underway for the rights of people of color, centered on their ability to exercise the right to vote.
As I mentioned, we find ourselves in an era when the fight for civil rights was in full swing. This led intolerant individuals—in this case, members of the Ku Klux Klan—to commit a series of hate-motivated murders in Mississippi. Among the victims was Vernon Dahmer, a community leader who was, in effect, carrying the weight of this struggle on his own shoulders. Investigating these cases was a lost cause; no one would speak, and the police—for obvious reasons—wouldn’t lift a finger. This is where Wayne Strider (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II) enters the picture: a Black FBI agent attempting to secure justice, only to be met with overwhelming indifference and corruption. Given the national outcry, the agency decides to take a drastic step: to cooperate with the "dark side" of the law.
Due to the commotion and the lack of cooperation from the local population, Greg Scarpa (Mark Wahlberg)—a mobster from New York affiliated with the Joe Colombo crime family who had previously done work for the FBI—was brought down to the South. Essentially, Scarpa did what the law could not; unconstrained by any legal rules or norms, he was free to take whatever actions he deemed necessary to achieve his objective. Naturally, this bothered Strider, who believed in justice—though he would soon come to realize that such a belief was merely a fantasy. From this point on, we see how these two men, with their conflicting ideals, join forces to investigate and shed light on the murders committed by the KKK. It is not at all far-fetched to imagine that this actually happened; the struggle in the South was brutal, and it is well known that the Italian mafia in Brooklyn wielded significant influence. While the intersection of these two worlds might seem like fiction, it was, in fact, a real-life effort that succeeded in solving several major cases. The film serves as a stark portrait of the harsh reality faced by Black people, while also offering a glimpse of the most satisfying revenge one could possibly imagine.
Killing Nazis is one of the most epic things you can see in a movie, but watching "justice" catch up with racists? That’s something else entirely. The real draw of the film is watching Scarpa in his element—extracting information from these men through torture and intimidation. They act all "tough" when they’re together, but the moment they’re sat down and interrogated, they shatter like glass. We also see Strider—a man with very firm principles—begin to shift his perspective as he realizes that the fight isn't always won in a "civilized" way; sometimes, you have to apply a little pressure to get things done. Watching that transformation—especially when the terror hits close to home—is top-tier; you can even see it in his facial expressions. If you enjoy watching the bad guys get what’s coming to them, there are some very satisfying scenes—though it’s not as graphic as you might expect. In fact, at times, it reminded me of Inglourious Basterds.
Mark Wahlberg is an actor tailor-made for roles like this; the way he inhabits the character and truly makes it his own is top-tier—and it’s not the first time he’s pulled this off in a film. His portrayal of an Italian mobster—the look, the gait, the way he speaks—is spot on. Then there’s Yahya Abdul-Mateen II—whom you might recognize from Candyman (a film I discussed a few days ago)—who also delivers a strong performance. It’s frustrating to watch an agent who genuinely wants to do right by his community, only to find himself unable to do so. I was particularly struck by his shift in mindset; he eventually embraces a wild, amoral path to achieve the justice he so desperately seeks. I really enjoyed it—I was never bored. It’s an entertaining film with a clear, linear plot, devoid of any major surprises. Ultimately, it’s all about securing justice by any means necessary. It runs for a little over an hour and a half. Highly recommended. I’ve included the trailer below.
Alright folks, that’s all for today, I hope you enjoyed it. ¡Sending a big hug to you all; see you next time!
