When you look into what are considered the best "slasher" films of recent times, this one pops up—yes, believe it or not. We’re just three days away from the end of "spooky season," and it’s been incredible to talk about horror, non-stop, for nearly a month. Today, I’m covering a film that might not be on everyone’s radar, but one that actually surprised me quite a bit. Released in 2022, it’s the kind of movie that seems aimed at Gen Z, incorporating various social themes; yet, beneath that, it’s a dark comedy blended with the horror and violence typical of the slasher genre. At times, as a quintessential millennial, I found the way it unfolds almost unbearable—but once you grasp who the target audience is and what the film’s intentions are, it becomes much easier to digest.
Cuando ustedes hacen el ejercicio de buscar las que son consideradas las mejores películas "slasher" de los últimos tiempos esta aparece por ahí, si, aunque no lo parezca. Nos faltan 3 días para que la spooky season se termine y la verdad es que ha sido increíble hablar de terror, ininterrumpidamente, durante casi un mes. Hoy lo hago con una de esos films que la verdad puede que nadie tenga en el radar pero que a mi me sorprendió bastante. Esto es del 2022 y es una película de esas que pareciera que va dirigida a la generación Z con algunas cargas sociales pero que detrás de esto hay una comedia negra junto con el terror y la violencia del slasher. Hay momentos en que a mi, un millennial de pura cepa, me pareció insoportable su desarrollo pero después entiendas a quien va dirigido y la intención y lo terminas digiriendo mejor.
This film is produced by A24—a studio known to those in the know for the quality behind its projects, even if they do have the occasional misfire. We follow a group of "friends"—and I use that term very loosely, given what unfolds—all in their twenties and quite wealthy, who decide to gather at one of their mansions for a party. From the very beginning, it’s clear that things aren’t as "cool" as they might seem; there’s an unmistakable, pervasive passive-aggression among the group that makes the atmosphere feel strange and tense. As the night wears on—and after they’ve consumed plenty of alcohol and other substances—they decide it’s a good idea to play "Bodies Bodies Bodies." It’s a game similar to Among Us, where the goal is to identify a fictional killer; essentially, one person—in a completely darkened house—must go around touching the others to "kill" them.
Esta película es producida por A24, para los conocedores sabrán de la calidad que hay detrás de sus películas aunque tengas sus fiascos por ahí. Acá tenemos a un grupo de "amigos", muy entre comillas porque después de lo visto no se yo, veinteañeros todos y con mucho dinero, que decidieron reunirse en la mansión de uno de ellos para hacer una fiesta. Desde el primer momentos ya se huele que la cosa no es tan cool como parece, hay una pasivo/agresividad en todos muy evidente que hace que el propio ambiente sea raro y tenso. Llegada la noche y después de haber bebido e inhalado de todo creen que es buena idea jugar Bodies Bodies Bodies. Este es un juego tipo Among Us en donde hay que descubrir quien es el asesino ficticio; es decir, uno de ellos, con la casa totalmente oscura, deberá ir tocando al resto para así "matarlo".
As time passes, things go completely to hell when one of the group is found with his throat slit—and dies. From this point on, attitudes shift drastically, and the focus turns to figuring out which of these friends committed the murder. The tensions and passive-aggressive remarks I mentioned begin to surface, revealing the deep-seated differences and resentments within the group; accusations—and, above all, a profound sense of distrust—take center stage. The story becomes a fight for survival: trapped in the middle of a storm and in total darkness, the group must identify the culprit. The film is highly entertaining, inviting the viewer to "play along" and try to uncover who is responsible, all while maintaining an intense level of suspense. Ultimately, you never know who to trust; everyone uses their powers of persuasion to claim their innocence, all the while accusing one another and airing their long-held, dirty laundry.
La cosa es que conforme va pasando el tiempo todo se va al mismísimo diablo cuando uno de ellos aparece degollado y muere. A partir de acá las actitudes cambian radicalmente y se enfocan en tratar de descubrir quien, entre estos amigos, asesinó a uno de ellos. Esas tensiones y esos comentarios pasivos-agresivos de los que les hablé empiezan a aflorar dando a entender las profundas diferencias y resentimientos que tienen como grupo; las acusaciones y sobretodo la desconfianza pasan a ser protagonistas. La historia se convierte en un ejercicio de supervivencia en donde medio de una tormenta y en la oscuridad absoluta tienen que dar con la persona culpable. Hay que decir que el film es muy entretenido porque invita al espectador a "jugar" a descubrir quien está detrás de todo al mismo tiempo que se vive una tensión y un suspenso muy alto porque al final del día no sabes en quien confiar, todos usarán el poder de convencimiento para demostrar que son inocentes mientras se acusan entre si y comienzan a sacarse los secretos.
I suppose it is a slasher, but a very mild one; there are deaths and blood—sometimes even graphic—but it all remains quite superficial. It feels as though that isn’t the film’s primary focus. What makes the movie work is its plot: watching the group fall apart, seeing how doubt can drive a wedge into a relationship, observing how easily people are influenced by others—lacking any independent judgment—and realizing that friendships can sometimes be nothing more than an illusion. That is where the true suspense and terror lie. As I mentioned, the film is never boring; staying attentive to everything unfolding around the characters is key. The interactions within this group of friends are pure gold—a profound, toxic dynamic, clearly fueled by the fear of death. There are no jump scares or cheap startles; the horror is rooted entirely in the human element and just how terrible people can truly be.
Creo que si es un slasher pero es uno muy light; hay muertes, hay sangre, puede ser gráfica pero todo de una manera muy superficial, siento que el propósito del film no es irse tanto por ese camino. Lo que hace que la película funcione es su trama, es ver como el grupo se desmorona, como la duda puede ser suficiente como para anteponerse a una relación, como las personas son muy influenciables por otras, la falta de criterio propio y que las amistades pueden ser un espejismo. Es ahí en donde está el verdadero suspenso y terror. Como dije la película no aburre, estar siempre pendiente de lo que pasa alrededor es clave. Las interacciones entre este grupo de amigas es oro puro, es una toxicidad abismal que se entiende que está motivada por el miedo a morir. No hay jumpscare, ni sobresaltos; todo radica meramente en el humano y en lo terrible que puede llegar a ser.
Another thing that really helps is the cast. Most of them weren't familiar to me, with a few exceptions: Myha'la Herrold from the series Industry, Chase Sui Wonders from a couple of films (I Know What You Did Last Summer and The Studio), and Pete Davidson. But honestly, the performances are top-tier; the frenetic energy of these women is absolutely wild—they cycle through drama, fear, and rage in a matter of seconds, and it’s executed perfectly. I don’t think the film would be what it is without these actresses' performances. For me, the best part is the ending—it’s something I’m sure you won’t see coming, and it’s what gives the plot and the story its real value. I thought it was brilliant. In short, it’s a great horror movie—laced with dark comedy and violence—that suggests either that you shouldn’t trust anyone, or perhaps that you should, because friendship comes first. It’s an hour and a half of fights, deaths, and intense anxiety. I’ll leave the trailer here so you can get an idea of what it’s all about.
Otra de las cosas que ayuda mucho es el elenco que tiene. No es muy conocido por mi salvo par de nombres: Myha'la Herrold, de la serie Industry; Chase Sui Wonders de un par de películas (I Know What You Did Last Summer y The Studio) y a Pete Davidson. Pero la verdad es que a nivel de actuaciones es muy top, lo frenéticas que son todas estas mujeres es una cosa demencial, el drama, el miedo, la rabia; todo lo interpretan en cosas de segundos y queda perfecto. Creo que la película no sería lo que es sin las actuaciones de estas actrices. Pero para mi lo mejor es su final, es uno que estoy seguro no se van a esperar y es lo que da el verdadero valor a la trama y s la historia. Me pareció muy genial. En fin, una muy buena película de terror pero con su comedia negra y violencia que nos dice que no confiemos en nadie o por el contrario, que sí lo hagamos porque primera va la amistad. Hora y media de peleas, muertes y angustia. Les dejo el tráiler y así ven de que va la cosa.
