Hello friends, good vibes to everyone.

Hola amigos, buenas vibras para todos.

On day 27 of this "spooky season," I want to talk about what is arguably the best Japanese horror film—the one that paved the way for everything that followed, including the Hollywood remake (which, I must say, never quite measures up to the original). The Ring—the film starring Naomi Watts—was an attempt to capture the terror and suspense that the Japanese filmmakers achieved so masterfully in their version. This is pure paranormal horror, centered on a curse that spreads among those caught in its path—a curse from which there may be no escape... or perhaps there is. It’s worth noting that this film dates back to 1998, yet it remains, in my view, a major benchmark in global horror cinema. Just keep in mind that this brand of horror is quite different from what we see today.

The essence of the film aligns with the concept of urban legends. It all begins with the deaths of a group of young people, which occur after they watch a video on a VHS tape. They had gathered in one location, watched the recording, and a week later, they all died under very strange circumstances. Seeking to understand what happened, Reiko Asakawa—a journalist and the aunt of one of the deceased—decides to investigate. She begins by tracing everything back to its source: the cabin where they watched the tape. Sure enough, the tape is still there; she watches it, and immediately receives a phone call warning her that she has only one week left to live. This call is, in fact, part of the curse—all the young people received it, and exactly seven days later, they died.

Reiko seeks help from her husband, Ryuji—played by the great Hiroyuki Sanada—who possesses certain psychic or clairvoyant abilities, which helps them more easily trace the origin of the videotape. As their investigation unfolds, they discover that it all began on a remote island with the tragic murder of a young woman named Sadako, who also possessed extrasensory powers. Her abilities were, in fact, extraordinary, and they serve as the root of the entire plot. When I say that this brand of horror is nothing like what we see today, it’s because I feel the Japanese approach to the genre is fundamentally different—something I’ve observed in anime, and now in this film. They focus far more on the backstory, ensuring that the subject matter itself radiates suspense and that the gradual uncovering of details keeps the viewer intrigued. To make this even more effective, they draw upon local folklore, tragic deaths, and human suffering; it is more about what is sensed or perceived than what is explicitly shown on screen.

Is the movie scary? Well, I’m not sure "scary" is the right word—it’s more about suspense; that’s the feeling you get while watching it. Ringu has some interesting scenes—just a couple, really—but it definitely delivers. Japanese horror doesn’t typically rely on constant jump scares; they use them, but only very sparingly. Instead, the focus is on building an atmosphere and a heavy, oppressive mood. That said, there are some striking, truly terrifying images, all of which are rooted in the tension and suspense that have been building up. The story plays out like a journalistic investigation mixed with the paranormal—you uncover clues, piece by piece, until you reach the conclusion. It’s not the kind of intense horror film filled with demonic possessions; rather, there’s "something" causing these deaths—something that might stem from vengeance or deep-seated resentment. One thing I should mention is that it’s a slow-paced film; it lacks the frenetic energy we’ve become accustomed to.

Japanese people are very expressive; although we might not see this often in films, they frequently surprise us with gestures or facial expressions that are perfectly suited to the situations on screen. They often convey terror through their eyes—through their gaze, or via a close-up shot focusing solely on the eyes. I mention this because, in this film, deaths are often signaled by a character’s gaze; while this is a recurring trait in their acting, it carries even greater weight within the context of this particular movie. The cast is excellent—starting with Hiroyuki Sanada, who is one of the best Japanese actors, even today. Both he and Nanako Matsushima (in her role as Reiko) succeed in conveying the necessary suspense. Ultimately, this is a film that might not be for everyone, given its intensity and pacing, but it is, overall, a fantastic movie—the horror is portrayed exceptionally well. It has a runtime of an hour and a half. I’ve included the trailer here so you can see how different it is from the American remake.
