If you look up most "best of" lists for horror films from recent years, you’ll almost certainly come across It Follows. It’s Day 25 of the "spooky season," and we’re discussing films that might be considered "classics" within the horror genre. How would one describe this film in the context of horror? The truth is, it lacks the basic elements that typically make a horror movie effective: there’s no demon or paranormal entity, no serial killer, no gore or violence, and it doesn’t deal with mental or psychological issues. What’s truly unsettling about this film is that you know absolutely nothing about "the thing" that is pursuing people—and, in all likelihood, you never will. It’s a psychological horror-thriller where we can see the threat, yet we know nothing about it.

The film begins in a dramatic and frantic manner: a young woman runs in terror, fleeing from something only she can see. In her desperation, she drives to a remote location—only to meet the worst possible fate: a brutal murder. The story proper begins some time later. We meet Jay (Maika Monroe), a young woman living in a quiet neighborhood with her mother and sister. She is dating a guy named Hugh (Jake Weary), who appears uneasy throughout several of their dates. One night, immediately after they have sex, he makes a chilling confession: through the sexual encounter, he has passed on a kind of "curse." An entity—invisible to everyone but her—will now begin to pursue her, and it will never stop unless she does exactly what Hugh did: pass the curse on to someone else.

One of the characteristics of this entity is that it can assume any form—whether that of a family member, a friend, or a stranger—and it will never stop its pursuit. Furthermore, if the person to whom the curse has been passed dies, the entity returns to its previous "owner." Essentially, the film focuses on the characters' attempts to deal with this entity while simultaneously seeking a way to eliminate it. The film follows a simple formula: it never reveals the origin or the nature of the evil. Counterintuitively, this makes the story all the more unsettling; not knowing the truth breeds anxiety, suspense, and intrigue—elements the film leverages effectively. Simply putting oneself in the victims' shoes—living with the constant fear that something is behind you at all times, and knowing that you alone can see it—is a truly harrowing experience. Given all this, the horror elements work exceptionally well, as they foster a persistent atmosphere of uncertainty and dread, leaving one unable to distinguish between what is real and what is not.

For a horror film, it lacks striking visuals or shocking, graphic imagery; instead, it relies on the dread of knowing that something is always lurking. Jay can see when she is being pursued, and the constant, agonizing need to escape and hide makes the entire plot incredibly stressful. There are a couple of well-executed "jump scares," and the entity—which constantly shifts its form—appears more somber and sinister at certain times than at others. It never speaks, remains expressionless, and its sole intent is to kill the person it is stalking. That said, is the film boring? Not at all—at least, I didn’t find it so. It certainly generates a good deal of suspense, though I personally don’t see why it would be considered a "gem" of modern cinema. The horror is clear, but I felt it could have used a bit more malice and intensity in its scenes.

Maika Monroe’s performance is very good; she has to go through every stage of terror, and she portrays them seamlessly and with great credibility. Pain, desperation, anguish, fear—she embodies all these emotions, carrying almost the entire weight of the film on her shoulders. Interestingly, the film doesn’t use sex as a weapon, even though it serves as one of the catalysts; in fact, it takes a back seat, which was a pleasant surprise. I found the ending to be quite standard—it didn’t leave much of an impression; it just is what it is. It’s a good horror movie that’s very enjoyable, though I honestly expected a little bit more. It runs for an hour and a half. I’ve included the trailer below so you can take a look.
