Sometimes, stories make their way into cinema and end up becoming urban legends—like the ritual of repeating "Bloody Mary" several times in front of a mirror, or the infamous "Candyman," who follows a similar formula. It’s Day 26 of "spooky season," and today we’re looking at a 2021 film that traces its roots back to 1992, when the great Tony Todd first brought the iconic character to life. Candyman is an entity that lures his victims by offering them candy—though, naturally, there is much more to him than that; his backstory and underlying history are truly compelling, tragic, and even sinister. This film functions as a slasher, yet it blends seamlessly with paranormal horror and suspense. The way these elements come together makes for a top-tier movie—one that is, unfortunately, quite underrated, as very few people talk about it.

The first thing I want to mention is that this film was co-written by Jordan Peele, which explains why it is so well crafted. The story—which touches on themes of racism, injustice, and horror—is set in Cabrini-Green, a former Chicago neighborhood where the public housing high-rises were demolished due to the issues that plagued the area. This led to the inevitable process of gentrification, prompting Anthony McCoy (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II) and his partner, Brianna Cartwright (Teyonah Parris), to move into a lovely loft nearby. McCoy is a painter, but his artistic career has yet to truly take off; he is in need of a fresh perspective or a new source of inspiration. It is at this point that he meets William Burke (Colman Domingo), a man who shares a story that will completely change the artist's life.

What Burke tells him leaves McCoy fascinated: he speaks of the Candyman—a specter, entity, or ghost whose origin is steeped in tragedy and injustice—who will appear to wreak havoc if his name is spoken five times in front of a mirror. Nearing the point of obsession, McCoy begins to incorporate these elements into his art, unaware that he is gradually descending into a deep, dark abyss of madness. His actions end up unleashing a supernatural violence that triggers a series of gruesome murders across the city. At its core, the film explores how this "legend"—or urban tale—becomes increasingly real and terrifying as time goes on. I must admit that this film wasn't on my radar; while I was familiar with the legend, I hadn't seen this particular movie (though I do recall watching the 1992 version). It’s a fantastic film—the gore is top-tier, the backstory of the character is exceptionally well-told, and the paranormal horror plays a much larger role than I had anticipated.

The very appearance of the Candyman is, in itself, deeply unsettling. A man with burned skin, missing an eye, and sporting a hook in place of a severed hand is not exactly someone you’d want to run into. Yet, that is the nature of this vengeful entity—one that manifests whenever someone tries to act brave, funny, or foolish. As I mentioned, it is a violent film; the deaths are graphic and bloody—the filmmakers certainly don’t hold back. Beyond that, there is a pervasive paranormal atmosphere; strange phenomena occur whenever he is near, and the film features jump scares that perfectly complement the dread one feels in the Candyman’s presence. Furthermore, the story is rooted in a deeper context: the issue of race in the United States. This serves as a significant social critique, as the Candyman’s very origin stems from a hate crime—a theme that remains central to the film, woven into the motivations and personalities of several characters.

The performances are very much in line with the quality of the film itself. Yahya Abdul-Mateen II is a fantastic actor—you might remember him from Aquaman or the Watchmen series—and here, he captures the essence of his character brilliantly. We see how a man, driven solely by a quest for fame, is willing to do anything—even if it means losing everything. I also really liked Colman Domingo’s performance; he’s another superb actor who, despite playing a supporting role, absolutely nails it. The ending is perfect, as these kinds of things never truly come to a definitive conclusion—since it all hinges on human behavior, it’s nearly impossible for it to ever fully "die." Ultimately, it’s all about vengeance, resentment, and instilling terror. I highly recommend this film; it far exceeded my expectations and strikes the perfect balance to make the horror truly enjoyable. It’s an hour and a half long—I’ve included the trailer below so you can take a look and hopefully decide to give it a watch.
