Hello friends, good vibes to everyone.
Hola amigos, buenas vibras para todos.
It’s the penultimate day of our "spooky season" marathon, where for 31 days we’ve been focusing entirely on horror. Today’s featured film is Hell House LLC—the first entry in a series that has spanned several years, though this initial installment remains the best of the bunch. Have you ever visited one of those haunted houses or "houses of terror" set up in shopping malls—the kind where you pay to get a good scare? Well, that’s exactly what this story is about—except, for those who stepped inside, the experience proved to be both deadly and terrifying. I’d often seen this film highly recommended, so I knew I had to check it out; it can’t be a coincidence that so many people enjoyed it. It’s a "found footage" paranormal horror movie, and the narrative works perfectly because the story unfolds in a setting that harbors dark secrets.
This is a mockumentary that follows an investigative team attempting to uncover what happened at one of these "haunted houses" on its opening night—an event that resulted in the deaths of about 15 people. Five friends chose the Abaddon Hotel as the setting for "Hell House LLC," a Halloween attraction that descended into absolute madness. We learn all of this through footage discovered at the site—which has since been shut down and boarded up—recorded by the creators themselves. It turns out the hotel is not what everyone assumed—or perhaps it is; the darkness contained within the place was far greater than they could endure. In the past, the hotel had been the site of strange and deeply sinister phenomena—occurrences that continue to this day.
It all stems from satanic cults that awakened malevolent entities and forces—forces that now inhabit the place, striking terror into anyone who steps within its four walls. The film essentially presents a compilation of recovered footage, documenting the horrors and bizarre occurrences that unfolded while a group of friends—trying to brush these events aside—pressed on with their plan to build a "haunted house" attraction. "Found footage" films possess an inherently unsettling quality; they make the experience feel—or at least appear—far more real, and in this case, that effect works perfectly. For those who have never visited such an attraction: they are filled with all manner of horror-themed elements, featuring dim lighting punctuated by strobe lights—a combination that makes the experience all the more jarring and traumatic to witness. I can tell you that the terror is very much present; thanks to the atmosphere of the house, some scenes are truly bizarre, fear-inducing, and terrifying—likely to leave the viewer feeling quite uncomfortable.
It should be made clear that this is a supernatural horror film, so you won’t see any gore or violence. It leans into psychological horror; the characters end up staying in the hotel while they set everything up, leading to increasingly direct and traumatic experiences. Their behavior begins to shift, and things become increasingly unsettling. The plot itself is straightforward—we simply follow the experiences of these friends—and as they grasp the dynamics and uncover various clues, we piece together the puzzle of what is actually happening there. It follows a familiar trope: one member of the team consistently tries to downplay events, driven solely by the desire to make money. We witness the resulting conflict, and—even without it being explicitly stated—it’s easy to foresee how things will unfold. I don’t think this is a film that leaves any room for boredom; in fact, it’s practically impossible to get bored, as you might miss something the moment you blink. It starts off a bit slowly, but gradually picks up momentum, building toward a climactic moment where tragedy strikes.
As for the performances, it must be said that—given the "found footage" format—they don’t particularly stand out. In this type of film, I feel what truly matters is the experience of watching it: getting a sense of what it’s actually like to be inside that house, along with all the discomfort and terror that permeates the atmosphere. For this reason, the performances feel fairly standard—or, at the very least, they don’t pack the punch one might expect. The ending fits perfectly with the situation in the house and the entities that dwell within it; it may leave some questions unanswered, but that’s likely intentional, setting them up to be addressed in the subsequent films of the series. All in all, this is a very strong horror movie—arguably one of the best "found footage" films I’ve ever seen. It features paranormal activity, plenty of suspense, a heavy, oppressive atmosphere, a few well-placed jump scares, and a narrative that descends into total chaos. It has a runtime of an hour and a half. I’ve included the trailer below so you can get a feel for the atmosphere of Hell House LLC.
Alright folks, that’s all for today, I hope you enjoyed it. ¡Sending a big hug to you all; see you next time!
