[Movie] (ESP-ENG) Ghostland | An uncomfortable film to watch - Review!

Hello friends, good vibes to everyone.

Hola amigos, buenas vibras para todos.

I’m generally not the type of person who gets easily unsettled by a film, but I have to admit that this one—at least to some extent—managed to do just that. "Incident in a Ghostland" (as it’s also known) is my pick for day 29 of the "spooky season"—a full-throttle psychological horror film. While it may contain elements of the slasher genre, that’s not its primary focus; instead, it leans more into creating a sense of deep discomfort and sadism. It features scenes that are quite difficult to watch, and it arguably boasts one of the best plot twists I’ve ever seen in a movie. I’ve always said that I never let critics—especially those on Rotten Tomatoes—guide my opinion; in fact, the critics there labeled this film a failure, which couldn’t be further from the truth. Taste is, of course, subjective, but in my view, this is a fantastic film.

Reviewing this film is going to be tricky because the plot twist is so significant that it encompasses almost the entire narrative. We follow a mother, Pauline (Mylène Farmer), and her two daughters, Beth (Emilia Jones) and Vera (Taylor Hickson), as they move into a house they have inherited from their late aunt. As is often the case, the house is imposing—far from cozy, it’s actually quite frightening. Why? Because the former owner was a collector of antiques, including porcelain dolls. The dynamic between the two sisters is complex: Beth is withdrawn and very fearful, while Vera is the complete opposite—much more independent. On the very night they arrive, an event occurs that will literally change their lives forever.

They are attacked by a pair consisting of a mentally impaired giant and a truly deranged, unhinged woman—a couple of psychopaths. The entire experience was deeply traumatic. As time passes, it seems Beth has managed to rebuild her life, yet she remains subconsciously tethered to that house, prompting her to return to help her sister and mother, who continued to live there. From this point on, everything shifts, leading to the film’s massive plot twist. It turns out the nightmare is far from over, and they must do everything in their power to escape this torment. Believe me when I say you won’t see the twist coming—it’s incredible. I mentioned that the film is uncomfortable to watch, and it truly is; the scenes featuring this "giant baby"—who is, in reality, a man with severe mental impairments—are deeply disturbing. You can genuinely feel the fear and terror experienced by the sisters. This stems from the nature of his relationship with them; the sequences are filled with intense sadism—the entire film is pure sadism.

As a horror film, it works perfectly; it’s a psychological thriller that employs various elements to heighten its impact—suspense, the unsettling use of dolls, the intense tension permeating the house, the deeply disturbing nature of the two characters (both in their physical appearance and their behavior), and an atmosphere that is both uncomfortable and grim. It’s the kind of film that might not be for everyone—and not necessarily because of gore or paranormal activity. Is there violence? Yes, plenty—though not the kind involving gallons of blood or elaborate, creative death scenes; rather, the film is inherently, fundamentally violent. There are also a few well-executed jump scares that might genuinely startle you. While the plot may seem quite linear at first, everything shifts midway through, making it impossible to look away. At times, you’ll find yourself questioning what is actually happening—that’s how intense it gets. The experience is deeply traumatic, and because it’s so easy to empathize with the characters, the performances—which are truly exceptional—become the heart of the film.

Emilia Jones is a young actress; she is 24 years old today, but at the time, she was barely 16. Her performance is truly impressive—both she and Taylor Hickson deliver remarkable portrayals of terror, suffering, suspense, and pain. I believe the two of them elevate the film to another level. It’s also worth mentioning the actresses who play their adult counterparts, Crystal Reed and Anastasia Phillips; they, too, perfectly capture the trauma the characters endured. All in all, for me, this is one of the best films I’ve ever seen—perhaps I’m exaggerating, but the feelings a movie evokes are ultimately what determine whether or not you enjoy it. It is incredibly uncomfortable, filled with suspense and sadism. A great surprise; I didn’t expect it to capture my attention so thoroughly. Highly recommended if you’re looking for an authentic film in this genre. It runs for an hour and a half. I’ve included the trailer below so you can take a look.

Great review. I was particularly struck by how you describe the film’s atmosphere and that brutal plot twist you mention. Although I confess I haven’t seen it yet, the fact that it manages to convey such a sense of unease, tension, and pure psychological terror shows just how effective it is within the genre. I’m definitely adding it to my watchlist for a night of good horror.
