Hello friends, good vibes to everyone.
Hola amigos, buenos vibras para todos.
It’s the final day of October—a month throughout which, for all 31 days, we’ve focused on horror. It’s been a really cool journey; I got to watch films I hadn’t seen before—classics that I can now finally cross off my watchlist. We’re wrapping up this "spooky season" with a slasher film that I suspect is a real favorite for many. Haunt is a story set on Halloween night, centered on a haunted house attraction (much like the film we watched yesterday) and a group of organizers—or hosts—who are distinctly eerie, sinister, disturbing, and sadistic. Unlike Hell House LLC, there’s nothing paranormal here; all the horror you’ll witness stems from the human mind and the depths of a person’s depravity. It’s a true feast of death and deep, unsettling discomfort.
It’s Halloween, so Harper and her friends decide to go out to celebrate. Harper is going through a difficult time; she has an abusive boyfriend and carries the weight of a major family trauma from her past. Despite all this, she decides to go out and have some fun. As the night unfolds, they find themselves on a deserted road and discover a local attraction: a haunted house. Upon arrival, they realize the place is completely isolated, with an atmosphere that feels dark and unsettling. Getting inside isn’t straightforward, though—they are required to hand over their phones. At first, everything seems harmless—just the usual, low-quality, mechanical jump scares—but as they move deeper inside, things begin to take a turn; what was once funny starts to lose its humor.
The costumed actors are supposedly there to scare people and involve them in what are ostensibly staged pranks—but the reality is quite different. These individuals exhibit such bizarre attitudes and behaviors that, rather than providing entertainment, they evoke sheer terror and discomfort. The film centers on six friends who must survive the entire experience within the house and try to make it out alive. Like all slasher films, this one has a unique twist: the sinister clowns engage in body modification—altering their own faces entirely to look like something else. The hook is that they intend to do the same to these young people; it’s as if they have a fetish for mutilation. This makes the film, at times, very raw and graphic; the death scenes are generally tied to this theme or are simply driven by unbridled, gratuitous violence. That said, the deaths—as is typical for this genre—are varied and offer something for every taste. I am confident that fans of this horror subgenre will enjoy the film just as much as I did.
The plot is simple: enter, process what is unfolding, survive, and escape. The film weaves Harper’s past trauma into her experience inside the house—serving as a form of challenge or a way for her to confront her deepest fears (her mother was a victim of domestic violence, and she had always feared her own father). This fear is used to render her vulnerable, until she undergoes a shift in mindset and begins to fight back. The "house of horrors" follows a classic template—filled with challenges, games, and even escape-room-style puzzles—all while layering in suspense, tension, intrigue, and the occasional jolt from a jump scare. It is anything but boring; in fact, it is incredibly entertaining to watch. The appearance of the individuals beneath the masks is striking—arguably even more terrifying when their faces are revealed than when they are wearing their clown masks—which makes some of the film’s climactic moments genuinely difficult to watch.
The performances are, for the most part, quite average—not necessarily bad, but none truly stand out. Harper (Katie Stevens) arguably has the most demanding role, as she has to grapple with the trauma she carries with her. As for the ending, I quite liked it; it served as a solid conclusion—one fueled by vengeance that brings our protagonist’s personal story to a definitive close. You can probably guess how things might end, but while you might foresee the outcome, the way it unfolds is another matter. I genuinely enjoyed this film; it’s a high-quality slasher, packed with violence and gore, featuring some truly peculiar, sadistic characters and some rather striking death scenes. I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys this genre—it’s the perfect kind of movie to watch on Halloween night. It has a runtime of an hour and a half. I’ve included the trailer below so you can take a look and decide for yourself if you want to watch it.
Alright folks, that’s all for today, I hope you enjoyed it. ¡Sending a big hug to you all; see you next time!
